M271 pretty rough on cold start and clickin noise for about 20secs.
But when warm flawless.

What fuel injector cleaner would you recommend? It's a 2009 c200k

Thanks

I would recommend Liqui Moly Injector cleaner - Germany's favourite brand apparently :) very good stuff but only available from their UK ebay shop. I used it for a cdi and after a few miles the difference could be felt. Alternatively, try some premium petrol fuel (bp ultimate and shell v-power etc..) which are also very effective. Before buying any injector cleaner, always read the label to see if its suitable for your car.

The problem in your car may not be solved by putting a cleaner liquid as it may not be the injectors. A star diagnostic check from MB dealer or approved merc specialist may be handy to check if everything is ok... Good luck

I had very good experience with Redex, and Forte also comes highly recommended.

But as mbenz1 said it is also possible that a few tankful of Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate will sort it.

Thhanks for your reply! I took it to dealers before and theyve allways said its normal for the noise clicking etc on the 4cyinder engine. Time will tell

No harm in cleaning the injectors, but what makes you think the clicking sound is related to clogged injectors? Fuel supply issues are usually more evident at the higher rev range. Perhaps it's valve clatter, until the oil gets to the top of the engine?

Just guessing it may be the injector not to sure. I am also 80% certain its valve clatter becuase within 20-30secs clicking stops and engine is very quite. When warm its faultless.

Do you think a 4 year old car with 24000 miles on clock would benefit with injector cleaner? ive allways used super unleaded fuel but recently been using supermarket super unleaded quite alot and have been told by numerous people supermarket fuel is the worst in terms of quality.

My M271 is 7 years old and has 45k miles under its belly, I have always only ever used Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate in it and nothing else, and it seems fine...

When you say 'clicking' do you mean a rattling / metallic sound which is pretty loud or something else?

We had a C200K 2005 Facelift (I assume it was the same engine in your Mercedes) and that had a very loud metallic rattling sound at every start (louder when cold) and after the engine was warm, it use to dissapear. I know for sure that rattling sound should not have been present as someone a few houses away from mine has a 2002 C180K (previous kompressor engine) and that has no rattling sounds what so ever when it is started... This rattling sound is a very very common problem in the kompressor engines. I have heard various 180,200 and 230 kompressor engines what that rattle, which is why some mechanics think it is normal. I suggest you go to a mercedes-approved specialist to check this problem out. IMHO, using an injector cleaner or premuim fuel may not solve this problem as most0likely its going to be a mechanical problem. As markjay said, it must be a valve clatter or something along them lines.

Thanks for your input! I've spoken to the dealer and they've mentioned because I use 0w-40 oil and with it being a thin oil it leaks out of the tappet valves very quickly when stood overnight. So Been told when the car is started in the morning the tappets have to repressurise themselves hence the clicking/clatter noise.

Also mentioned if i use 5w-40oil which is a little thicker it wouldn't leak out of the valves as quick as the mobil 1 0w-40 and should reduce most of the clicking/clatter on a cold start.

Does that sound about right ??

What oil do you guys use in the m271 engine?

Makes sense to me. That sounds like a valid reason to explain the noise.

I can't remember what oil is used in this engine..Markjay should be able to provide you with an answer..

Or alternatively:

Try looking at the owners manual for the oil grade.

Also, I would stick to Mobil oil all the time when considering an oil change :thumb:

Checked owners manual recommends oils 229.3 and 229.5. Both shell helix and mobil 1 one meet this. But she'll helix 5w-40 is slightly thicker. I changed the oil 4 weeks ago using mobil 1 0w 40 do you think I should splash out and change it to 5w 40 shell and see if it makes a difference? Or just wait and do it at next oil change?

Maybe changing the oil might be a good idea but since the old oil is fully circulated in the system, logically you should wait untill next service is due. Other opinions guys???

In going to try and ring dealership tomorrow cos I remember a year ago they were trying to sell me an approved engine flush with my service when the Car was in warranty. Going to try and see if I still can purchase that and hopefully give the internals of the engine a good clean.

Not that I noticed....

I use Mobil 5W-30 as recommended and provided by Olly PCS who carried-out the last two services on the car.

Prior to that the car was serviced by two MB dealers who used Castrol 5W-30 and Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40.

So my car never had 0W oil in it, and I therefore do not know if it would 'click' with thin oil...

On another note Wynns do a valve train treatment that is supposed to free up gummed valve lifts and improve the oil circulation thus eliminating valve clatter, though I don't know if this will help in your situation.

Said that... if the only ill-effect of the 0W oil is a 20 second clatter when cold - why not just live with it until the next oil change is due?

Just worried it might be causing some damage! Mercedes dealers sell an engine flush do you think it would be safe to use?

I had an E class with a 271 engine , it was making a clattering noise on start up mostly when warm . The clatter was being caused by the cam chain it had stretched . It could be worth getting this checked
