You can.....but why would you want to run old oil through a new filter...?

If you have a filter that changes from the top of the engine then , yes.
If you are doing this just to cut the old filter up to insect for 'glitter' Remember the new filter should come with new 'O' rings.

land rover..but it is deliberate in the name of customer satisfaction since all Land Rovers leak, all the time and if the filter is full it guarantees this. As they say, if a Land Rover doesn't leak, it has run out of something

Yes - Sorry - I do remember once (a long time ago) doing an oil change on a VW flat four.

If you have to lose some oil when changing the filter , just catch in a very clean receptacle and pour it back in the engine.
