Hi,

My W204 OM651 is making a rattle on morning start ups for about 3 seconds, I've heard it could be just the timing chain tensioner, but reading through most of the post in this forum it sounds like I will need to change the Chain.

Does anyone recommend any good garages in the Bury/Bolton/Manchester area who will change the timing chain/tensioners?

How much should I roughly be paying?

Car is a 2011 with 136k on the clock OM651 C220

£700 ish inc genuine parts and labour is what I paid IIRC. This included the two cam-sprockets too which most places don’t do.

Not sure about indies near you but there is one in Loughborough who is highly recommended.

Thanks, shame Loughborough isn't local, sounds like a decent price with genuine parts.

A local garage qouted me over £900 with non eom parts. He mentioned there are 3 chains to replace, I walked away as soon as heard that.

Why not click on the Forums section , look under the section near the bottom headed Mercedes Club Community and then subsection Mercedes Specialists around the uk ? Should find one or two not too far away.

Nick Webster, Poynton, Cheshire.

This would be run of the mill for any of them. I would expect a telephone quote would be easy to get.

Try to change the chain tensioner first, that's what I did at 185k miles and issue gone.

Mercedes specialist. You don’t want someone practicing on a job like this and it might be cheaper labour wise as they have done the job a thousand times before.

Chain is at the back of the engine. Some will want to remove the engine although I believe it’s possible in situ?

I tend to disagree. Any good mechanic should be able to do this job. Also it can be down to the value of the car and the spare money in your pocket.

Well, anyone ( mechanic ) who is working on the same make day in day out (for many years in some cases) will know his car inside out....and will know well the particular foibles of the make he specialises in. I've worked on a good spread of vehicles, and despite the job description, say clutch and flywheel repolacement, which is a pretty standard on a workshop job card, yet it can vary from make to make. I'm not saying that any mechanic would be unable to do the job, far from it, but the specialist mechanic will have more experience.

Pretty much every garage I tried that wasn't a merc specialist refused to take on the job when I had the chain rattle issue. Any mechanic might well be "able" to do the job but pretty much all of them wont.
I used a specialist merc Indy and they knew the cars inside and out, the job was done properly as they knew all the potential issues and problems and dealt with them easily.

Anyone not familiar with these cars is on a learning curve and I wouldn't want them learning on my car..
