W204 Wind Noise

Having covered a few miles in the W204 C63 now I have noticed more wind noise at motorway speeds than I used to on my old W204 C250. It seems to become more noticeable from about 55mph upwards and is sometimes quite invasive. I would say it is emanating from the lower windscreen area.

Does anyone know if W204's generally suffered from wind noise issues. Could it be I was just lucky with the last one or am unlucky with this one?

Can't say i've ever noticed it in either my current car or the C320 I had before.

Has it had a screen replaced?

W204's don't generally suffer from wind noise issues, although the early ones with the "dumbo ears" mirrors were a little noisier.

Worth checking that it has correct wiper blades fitted or the plastic scuttle at the bottom of the screen as it could be loose, especially if it's had a new screen that your not aware of?

Still has original screen. It only had a couple of hundred miles on it when I got it a couple of weeks ago. Will have a nose around at the weekend when I get a chance and check scuttle etc. Funnily enough I never noticed it tonight on way home on motorway.

At the end of the day I can have it looked at under warranty but I just wondered if it was a common issue.

I have a late 2012 c220 and have suffered wind noise from around passenger a pillar since new. Been back to Mercedes a few times and every time have asked them to look but they say everything is as it should be. Mine starts at about 60 mph.

The source of wind noise can be difficult to locate if everything appears to be correctly fitted.

A technique that I've used in the past is to tape over door shuts, window seals, etc. with electrician's tape and then go for a drive. If the wind noise has gone, I then remove bits of tape from different areas one by one with a test-drive after each removal until the noise comes back. At least you know what the source is and can then work out how to deal with it. Back in the early 1980's I had a Mk1 Escort that had a pronounced whistle from the driver's side A-pillar at any speed over about 60mph. Using the technique described I found it was caused by the profile of the leading edge of the rain gutter at the bottom of the pillar - something I'd never have found otherwise.

As the technique is pretty time consuming, it's unlikely that a Main Dealer will do anything other than a visual inspection to verify that everything looks to be fitted where it should be, and with no obvious damage.

Hi Guys

Quick update- after a bit of fiddling around with the trim that runs down the side of the windscreen things seem to have improved (for now at least). Would say that the black trim (whatever it called), passenger side at bottom was the issue. it just doesn't seem to be a very tight fit.

Anyway hopefully problem is solved for now

Andy
