Hi. Please can someone advise me on buying a 66 plate mercades 250d
vin w205
engine 0m651
38k on the clock
Fmbsh
Looking to buy from a garage in york called richard hollins merc specialist.

Is there anything I should look out for? Or expect whilst owning the car. This will be 1st mercades

I keep reading about rust on subframe.
Nox sensor
Timing chain and tensioner.
Pan roof failing.

Are these cars that bad? Or am I just being fed negative reviews?

any feedback would be grateful

Hi Jon 89 ,

If your prosped car runs on large wheels the tyres are expensive to replace.I won't purchase diesel engine cars due to emissions control systems that are expensive to repair. My C207 had a Pano roof that was perfect in every aspect.I won't buy car unless it has a full manufacturers service history that should show the major systems services such as gearbox as an example. The gear change on my car was good.

Check the conditions of the wheels as other members have had cracking issues but again on my car the quality of the wheels were perfect.

Make sure that everything on the car works prior to purchase.

I had the intelligent highlight package that was superb.

I car my car from new 65 plate and it covered 43000 with no issues apart from the rear subframe that failed causing the car to be written off.The subframe was inspected some 18 months prior and passed as perfect until it failed. My car only spent one winter in the UK so no road salt in its life.

Parts can be expensive.

In conclusion I do miss my Mercedes , totally reliable , well built and a joy to drive.

I cannot pass comment on other questions you asked.

Hi

Hi thankyou for the advise and feeback.

The car is sitting on 18s I think, he mentioned he's had the wheels refurb. The garage is a mercades specialist, they are stating its had a full diagnosis.

It's got a full mercades service history, with a gearbox oil change amongst the service history.

I've been reading about the sub frame, I can't believe yours was written off. I thought mercades had a 30yr rust warranty? Or did it fail from something else? This is what worries me, buying this car and having issues like the sub frame for instance. The salesman tried to fob me off saying that eith thr older models but ive been reading different.I know at some point the nox sensor and adblue is going to give me a headache.

I'm curious what car do you drive now then?

I have the same engine in a gle - 2016 April car built in January 2016.
It has FSHMB - done less than 24k miles
Nox sensor busted soon after 3rd service the car was about 3.5 yrs old.
I read the forums and put it to MB, they replaced just the one that was faulty
FoC and gave me a free loan MB for the 3 days.

Never heard re timing chain but possibly oil leaks at higher mileage

Search for OM651 you will see its often the couple of oil leaks and nox

Re pan roof, keep it clear of debris and should be ok,

Thanks for the feedback.
I keep reading about the nox and adblue problems. How much would it of been to replace if you didn't get foc.

No problem
The nox and Adblue problems are infamously legendary.

The nox sensors, I'm not sure if MB changed the spec/improved them but the car still runs ok, ie got from new April 2016.
However, as I said only one was replaced and the car is now 8.5 yrs old and ok but it does have a full FHSMB

My driving style does not help as the vast majority of trips each way is now one mile it used to be 3.

Re rear subframe, I'm sure there is info on this site and I guess someone else may come around and advise if the car
you are considering is affected.

If possible, avoid diesel unless you do loads of miles regularly

Well to say it's now 8.5yrs old, and it's not gone again, happy days!. I've read worse. I guess it's literally pot luck with cars. I have asked if this car has any history with nox etc. But nothing is there.

Well I do about around 26miles a day I'd say about 30min of that is on the motorway. So i feel like I'm stuck in between diesel and petrol. I have a diesel now with no adblue. Touch wood it's been ok with the dpf and egr.

I've had one person commenting on their rear sub frame, it failed on him and wrote his car off. Which doesn't sound promising. He also stated 18months prior to that, his sub frame was inspected with no advisories, so within that time scale who knows what had happened. Or who even inspected.

We’ve had a ‘16-plate C250D (S205) for nearly 8-years, it’s now at 79,000 miles and has been on an MB service plan since we’ve had it.

The 19” rims (as per my avatar) look great, but with run-flat tyres are very hard ride and the very low profile tyres mean the rims are vulnerable to damage from potholes… been there, done that. We replaced them with 18” rims and normal tyres. Night and day better now.

The auxiliary battery (actually a capacitor located in the passenger footwell) failed at 18,000 miles in 2018 and was replaced under warranty. This is a common problem. Been fine since.

One of the front parking sensors failed in 2020. Put up with it for a while, finally relented and it replaced in ‘22 (didn’t realise I’d left it so long…).

Had all brake discs and pads replaced (by an Indy) with OE parts in 2022 at 63000 miles and a cost of about £750.

Not so far had any AddBlue/NOx sensor issues. Hoping it stays that way. The sensors don’t like being wet, so a constant diet of short journeys is not a good situation for the car.

Beyond that, it’s been a great car. Still enjoy driving it.
