W205 C200 Engine and Transmission

As for the 7g+ transmission, I have it on my W204 (equipped with the M274 1.6L Turbo engine), and it's fine. Mine shifts harsh for the first two shifts when cold though, something I did not experience with other automatic cars I had before (including my previous W203 with the 5g transmission). Not sure if it's a characteristic or a one -off, at any rate the car is due an ATF change later this year (Year 5 service) so we'll see if this helps. But after the first couple of up-shifts the box is fine and smooth.

Ah ok! so it's not just me who was thinking that my C180 W204 is acting weird. During a cold start and for first few minutes the gears change on high revs which sometimes annoys me and I was thinking about mentioning this to my merc specialist during my next service/MOT (next month) but it seems like this is normal?

Yes, it is normal! I believe it's to allow the catalytic converter to warm up faster and reduce cold start emissions quicker. It should settle down within a few hundred meters, though.

Shifting-up at high revs when the engine is cold is normal... doing it with a jolt, isn't :(

My old W203 and my Kia Soul both shift-up late when cold, but they do this smoothly.

The W204 is due ATF change later this year, we'll see if this helps.

I have a 2016 C200 estate and I find the 2.0 litres 181bhp/300Nm engine perfectly adequate and a very good smooth match to the 7G auto transmission. Mercedes quote 7.2 sec for 0-62 for the saloon auto which is quicker than the 220d about which there are few complaints. And of course the petrol engine is a far quieter more refined drive compared to the noisy 2.1 diesel.

However it is a great pity that Mercedes UK doesn’t offer any petrol version between the C200 and the C43.
The C250 (211bhp) and the C300 (241bhp) versions are sold in most other countries, but not in the UK.

I have the c300 in the UK. What makes you say it’s not sold here? Have they dropped it on the facelift?

I assume you have the C300 coupe or cabrio?

These are the only C class models sold in the UK to offer the M274 241bhp engine. The W205/S205 petrol saloon and estate versions only offer the 181bhp engine until of course you get to the C43/63 models, for me way beyond my reach.

Maybe Mercedes will offer a better range of petrol versions in the face-lifted version, I hope so. Otherwise I will be looking at the A4 Avant 252 or the 330i Touring.

Yes I have the coupe. I thought engines were consistent across all of the c class models. That’s an absolutely ridiculous omission from MB. Anybody know why there is no 300 saloon?

On a general note... the RHD market is considerably smaller than the LHD, so MB don't bother with making all of their models available also in RHD.

I picked up mine a few days ago now but in coupe guise and I'm very happy with it. Pulls well and although I have the 9G box, it's quick enough to respond and change down. I had the 7G in my previous car and found it to be a bit jerky at low speeds but apart from that I had no major complaints.
I'm especially pleased with how quiet and refined the engine is.

Well the good news is that Mercedes have within the last week or so quietly announced that the 2018 face lifted W205 range will now include a C300 saloon and C300 estate, to sit alongside the the C200 models and the C43 already released. The C300 will have the M274 1991cc engine but with power increased to 258hp and 370Nm torque. The new C200 petrol engines use (as far as I know) a new 1497cc unit developing 184hp with EQ boost of 10kW

The diesel range currently consists of the new 1950cc 194hp diesel engine with 400Nm torque. Hopefully we will soon see a 3 litre diesel option added. One of the nicest cars I have driven was a W204350CDI, such effortless performane.

I can’t see the 3 litre diesel being added any time soon, particularly with the current market shift. Today the 200d was introduced with a manual gearbox and the plug in hybrid petrol and diesels will be released towards the end of the year
