Hi all, my cars done 62k and dealer tells me oil & filter should be changed at 37k! so I need to get it done although the gearbox is as sweet as a nut. Dealer says £240+vat less 10% parts and labour if still within the Mobo somthing or other which it's not as the last service was done by an Indy by the previous owner. Any ideas what's a good price. thanks Lockking

Seems very ott for a gearbox oil change.....get it done by an indy, it should be much cheaper....

I think these boxes were meant to be "sealed for life" but conventional wisdom says get the oil and filter changed as soem failures were experienced.......we had ours done at about 62k when we had a W208 320. Since 2004 gearbox service is recommended at aroudn 40k

Thats what Mercedes Epsom told me as well.

Only £165 including a flush out with proper MB atf, new filter and gasket. This should be about the correct figure for an specialist.

And that`s why he should have a nice drive down to you :)

Might be doing that. Just down the road piece.

Hello, I had my ATF change on my SLK done at PCS, very impressed ! Regards Damian. :)

Had the atf, filter etc changed a couple of weeks ago on my w208 clk320 cab(2002),the units are not sealed for life(mine had done 75k & although the gearbox was faultless & smooth had it done anyway).I had mine done by mb guildford(Tony Purslow),they offer 40% off of labour & 15% off of parts on cars that are 6 years old or more.Interestingly i asked them to check the diff level at the same time & was told that they are sealed for life:confused:

They are not sealed for life either! Its very cheap and very easy to do yourself. I would change the diff oil if its never been done and if the car has done 75k.

Learn something new every day;),although mb guildford told me the diff was sealed for life they said they had checked the level etc & it was fine:confused:

By "sealed for life" MB meant that it was intended that the gearbox & diff oil would last the life of the car and would never need changing......subsequent gearbox failures lead them to change this view round about 2004....If you look at service handbooks prior to 2004 they did not have a requirement to change the gearbox oil....now there is a requirement to change the oil at about 40,000 miles..

Notwithstanding the above, it has always been possible to change the oil and filter on gearboxes prior to 2004 if one chose to do so, so the terminology "sealed" is a bit of a misnomer!

PS...this is my understanding of the subject having now owned 3 mercs over the past 5 years from talking to service departments at dealers....

Mighty strange! I spoke to them awhile back and they said mine wouldn't need changing as it was a facelift W208 and all of them were sealed units. They said it was the later models (W209) that needed changing. I then spoke to Epsom MB who said Mercedes now recomended a change at 40k. Im gonna get it down anyway. Never thought of the diff! I'll get that done as well.

I had a facelift W208 with a "sealed" gearbox.....my local indy still managed to change the oil and filter though!

For what it costs it's not worth the risk!
