I've found a steering wheel to replace my worn one. Only problem is, it has no airbag....the airbag went off.

Can I use my airbag and pop it into the replacement steering wheel? I'm sure I heard the airbag is a separate unit that can be lifted out whole and intact???

Its the command steering wheel with radio and telephone controls.

Of course you can. The airbag is indeed a separate unit and as far as the steering wheel is the correct facelift version then it will fit on.

The airbag is secured with star bolts behind the steering wheel but because is wired in, there is a procedure to follow (like not having the key in the ignition or a certain position) and may need the star after as well.

I would let a specialist do the swap as it would cost next to nothing to do. Some members maybe able to give a specific how to if you definitely wish to diy it.

Whenever you work on the airbag/SRS system the easiest and safest procedure is to disconnect the battery and wait a couple of minutes before you undo any of the electrical connectors - all coloured yellow so's you know which they are.

Pull the steering wheel all the way towards you, for the best clearance.

Undo the 2 torx screws as described. The airbag unit lifts out and you can then disconnect it and gain access to remove the steering wheel - make sure it's straight ahead before you do and then you won't get the new one on in the wrong position.

You don't need Star.

Thanks guys,

Its a swap from another W208 of the same year thats been in an accident and the airbag went off. The steering wheel itself is perfect.

The wiring - are they 'plug and go' or is there any undoing of terminals etc etc..I need to watch out for?

Disconnect the battery and do it yourself..... if you're sensible and carreful there should be no problem.

make sure you dont touch anything on the car though as otherwise you will trigger the airbag fault light that needs to be reset on STAR otherwise.

this how-to will help you on the removal/refit

Hi,
Do not turn the ignition on whilst the airbag is disconnected as it will cause the SRS light to stay on and you will have to get it turned off via a diagnostic computer.

Hi,

could someone confirm the size of the hex screw that holds the steering wheel?

Thanks
