Hello guys, I'm new to this forum.

I have a 1999 CLK320 and I need a new gearbox ( I think) - terrible rough noise coming from the box and had a specialist look at it, he reckons it needs a new box.

So can anyone tell me where I can get a box, and a rough price of what I should be paying.

Thanks in advance

Hi,
Probably your cheapest option is to get a second hand box, as repairing your box i reckon would cost a £1k+, new from MB £2.5kish.
You could try breakers such as Dronsfields, Mercman etc, even e-bay, i just looked and found this one, but confirm whether from 230 or 320 as the seller seems to be a bit confused.

Hi & welcome to the forum, what mileage is the car at & has the autobox had an atf/filter change also did the specialist plug your car into star diagnostics to find out if any fault codes came up relating to the gearbox?(Seems a bit premature to say you need a new autobox when it could just need an atf/filter change).

Thanks for the replies guys.

The gearbox had the ATF changed but the mechanic said when they took the old fluid out there was lots of swarf and metal bits in it. Seems pretty much terminal from what he said.

The car has 118k on it and I don't know if they plugged it in to the diagnostics.

ahh the joys of mb

I'll take a look at the ones of ebay - cheers matey.

Sounds like the car had never had an atf/filter changed before if they found swarf in the fluid, probably why it knackered the box, might be cheaper to cut your losses & find a good simular replacement car?

hello again guys

only getting round to getting the car fixed now!!

mechanic reckons about 600 all in for second hand box fitted - does this sound reasonable? He did say that if the torque converter is gone it will be about 1200.

One thing I forgot to mention (because I never realised it was valid) is that the guy was towed about 8miles about a month prior to the box heading west. Would that have damaged the box/and or torque converter?

Also, do you reckon its worth fixing or just sell it as it is?
