Hello all :thumb:, a newbie here to this forum

Need a little guidence towards sorting out a rough idle issue i have, tho its not really that rough.

    Symptoms...
..cold/warm/park/drive or neutral i have a small amount of idle 'play' or 'hunting' :p.
..on start-up every 1 out of 10 times the engine cranks over for a few seconds more than usual as if there's no fuel in the tank.

    No engine on.

    What ive done so far....
    1. MAF when disconneted didnt change anything but the fan comes on full power(gradualy builds up i mean) - is that normal? - cleaned and put back on now when unplugged there's a noticeable drop in revs so needed a clean up.
    2. Fairly loud ticking noise from the Passenger side which after a little 'googling' around is the purge valve i believe - disconnected while running with no change to the engine plugged back in and the ticking has stopped yay!:thumb:
    3. Slight split in the oil breather hose to passenger side case - sealed the hose.
    4. Checked for vacumn leaks and all seems well.
    5. Ive notive the belt tensioner has some play, while idling the tensioner (to the immediate right of the crank pulley, looking at it straight at it) moves about 3-5mm which is from the spring - could this be the issue? belt seems in good order.
    6. Oil changed today. Plugs a year ago -> that was a job and half i must say.

I think thats all of it, thanks in advance for any feedback.
    Mark.

Have you had your car on STAR, there are smooth running tests that wll aid diagnoses.

Try and find a local Indie rather than an MB dealer. Where are you, perhaps someone can recommend someone close by.

You can, but generic readers are OK for resetting engine codes but not much use for full diagnoses.

they will price per hour, so you will not get a price to fix.

Cost me £30 to get my CLK diagnosed (with similar symptoms).

Also worth checking the ignition leads, I know one of mine needs changing, but I'll do the whole set when I have time, as the dodgy one has disintegrated and the others may go the same way when I'm doing the plugs.

There are twelve on these engines, which works out a bit expensive, which is why they get neglected by previous owners :(
