Last night I took the car out after it had been sitting for a few weeks. Started up on the button.
20 mins into the journey, the engine cuts out as I came to a stop at traffic lights and the dash lit up. Then it refused to start for a good 5-10 mins. It was cranking and I could hear the fuel pump. I left it and it eventually started and the check engine light came on. I drove it for an hour without issue, until I eventually parked up and switched it off.
When I returned to the car maybe 2 hours later, it started without issue and the check engine light had gone. On the way home the engine cut out again maybe 30-45 mins into the journey whilst I was driving. I kept trying to crank but it wasn't having it. It eventually started after a good 30-45 mins. I managed to drive it down the road and it cut out again. I called for a recovery truck and waited.
Once I got it home it fired straight up and acted like nothing had happened...
So now it looks like I'm left with an electrical fault. It drives OK. We can rule out gearbox controller and fuel pump (gearbox control unit was replaced with a brand new one 2 years ago). That leaves ignition and ecu.
My first thought is crank sensor.
Thoughts?
