W209 Balance Shaft Sprocket

My CLK was "diagnosed" with a worn balance shaft sprocket. I say "diagnosed" because it took 3 visits to the dealer before they managed to work out that the balance shaft was the culprit.

They've given me the diagnostic sheets, to prove that they now have the correct explanation. As far as I can see, it's an engine out job!

My question is, is this correct, and are there alternatives to replacing the entire balance shaft ( as seems to be the task list on the work sheet )?

3 services from a main dealer and 3 from a specialist. Last service was 8000miles ago by a main dealer.....they changed the magnets for the camshaft adjustment, so they were in the right area, but didn't pick up any excessive wear in the sprocket?

It's hard to see wear inside the engine. ;)

Wear is only to the sprocket. Sits outside the block. If they changed the magnets they must have seem some signs that the adjustment wasn't spot on

The wear is the balancer shaft sprocket...which sits hidden inside the timing case.

Fight, fight , fight.... Just a little wound up about the whole story. Merc Sunderland haven't even bothered to get back to me about a quote for the work yet. I'd rather just get the work done, but would like a second opinion about the need to have the engine out.

Any experience out there with a suitable independent in Swindon or Sunderland area?

Thanks Grober, all good info. Not good news, but good to know its a known fault. All I need now is a place to fix. BTW the car must have heard that I was planning to rip its engine out ( amongst other parts of its anatomy ) and the EML has now extinguished itself.

What mileage has it done???

I understand some indies are quoting £1600 to £2000 for this work.

77,000 miles, first hint of trouble I've had with it. The EML keeps going on and off depending on the mood of the car. I'm hoping its something more sensible than what the dealer are quoting. The whole saga started when I dropped it in to have an intermittent hesitation and drop in power looked at, that turned out to be a crankshaft sensor, I wonder if the 2 are related? ( wishful thinking he says )

Is it registered before 2008?? If it is, its most likely the balancer shaft. There are a fair few threads online about this issue, just type in 'm272 issues' in google. Mines a 2006 with 40k at the moment, I luv the drive ability of these engines but this issue does worry me sometimes, hopefully it won't occur during my ownership :-/

Independent in Sunderland is quoting £2300 for the job, same as the main dealer. Still looking around for a more sensible price. I'd like to get it done properly, as I'm looking to sell. Almost tempted to advertise on EBay "as is", and explain the work that needs to be done, someone with industry contacts could get the job done at cost!

Anyway, watch the for sale section. Only CLK with guaranteed Balancer Shaft done!!

Hello,
I am an independent Mercedes-Benz repairer, I spent 10 years in a Mercedes garage in Scotland and have recently started a part time business repairing mb cars. I have a lot of experience with the m272 and m273 sprocket issues and have repaired many of them. If you have no luck with the dealer please contact me and I can give advice on how to repair, yes it is an engine removal job and will take approx 10 - 15 hours.
Please note, I am not trying to advertise services but if my post does appear this way I shall remove it by request. Thanks

We used to do a fair few of these cost wise you are looking at around 10 hours labour so £600 + £750 ish for the bits. Just looked at the last one we did and the bill with a few other minor things was £1545. So that should give you a guide on price when you are ringing around

That's roughly what I was expecting. But dealer quote ended up at 3200 ( after a good will deduction ) and the Indy at 2300. Second Independent still hasn't got back to me with a price.
