I have just got a new CLK, but noticed the other night that the Gearbox indicator - the P-D-N-R down the side of the gearknob doesn't illuminate at night which makes it a bit odd trying to find reverse!

I know all auto's are the same layout, but it just struck me as unusual. The button to change gearbox modes S-M-C doesn't work either so I wonder if they are all connected, or rather disconnected.

Should the indicator illuminate?

Thanks,

Simon

I to have a w209 and it has the display on the dash not by the gear stick so nothing to worry about

it lights up on the facelift 203 ..

Shouldn't be a problem. You're more likely to look into the display on the dash than to look at the gear lever. I have a CLK 209 but only remember to look at the switches by the gear lever when I want to change gear for winter driving.

For starters, you have the sequence wrong....its P-R-N-D.....also its easy to remember, reverse is one click back, drive is all the way back.....don't really have to look at lever or dash display.....I rarely do in either or our mercs (CLK or C-Class). Refer to dash display if you want to know which mode you are in.

Thanks guys, apologies for getting the sequence wrong (P-R-N-D) that is why I need them illuminated!!!

Another 209 owner says the four gear mode thingies do illuminate so I think I have a dodgy connection. I don't expect it to show what gear or mode I am in, as that is on the dash.

If the gear lever mechanism is same as my W203, if you keep lever held over to Right when moving lever rearwards, it will automatically stop at the Reverse position. A type of baulking device is fitted on mine.

Good luck.

Yeah, a muppet would quickly learn the layout and I still happily found reverse but it is just a bummer it doesn't light up.
