w209 roof not working

Hi, did enyone of you get the soluton for this issue?

"Holy Revised Thread" said Batman!

My W209 roof needs a really good push from inside a couple of inches and then opens normally. I don't *think* the locking mechanism is not being released correctly as when I push upwards it feels disengaged. It closes and locks down fine and there are no error messages. STAR did not reveal any fault codes. The hydraulic fluid level is fine and no evidence of any leaks in the car. Going to use silicon spray to lube obvious "pivot points" etc. shortly

Any thoughts please?

You may have stretched cables.
Thanks Ollie. How do I check for that please?

Added information: Just operated the roof with Sue watching from the outside. She said (and I agree) that sounds and look as if the roof "unlocks" then immediately tries to lock itself again, but the upward push stops it latching so it then opens correctly. Hope that makes sense!

Ahh ok, then a sticking switch maybe the culprit. It needs some time on a Star looking at the switch values to see what is happening. You still may have stretched cables though. The lining needs to come down and have a look to see if anything is not right.

Reading about how the roof operates and thinking about it logically, it could well be the cables. But I can only find a guide to adjusting/sorting/inspecting the cables for W208 (unless someone is better at searching than me!). Does anybody know if the procedure will be the same for W209 (except the roof release handle removal of course on W208) Any tips welcome too!

I want to attempt myself if feasible with my indie as a backup

If it were me I might be tempted to just live with it and give it a shove to get it going as you currently do. Sometimes on an old car things don’t have to be perfect?! Unless you feel that in doing so you’re being mechanically unsympathetic in which case it does need to be looked at I guess as you don’t want to cause a bigger issue.

I don't disagree with you - but my wife gave me the strangest look when mooted! Hoping she will move on her B-Class and use the CLK so I confess to an ulterior motive!

But back to your point - if the fix is some of my time and not too much money then worth it. Otherwise......? Cheers

Does this help? Maybe worthy while checking that the distances are correct. Just after 1 min.

You can also try to manually open the soft top and that may help pinpoint any resistance at the front.

Maybe there is a business opportunity for a specialist brand to maintain and repair "automatic roof systems" for all car types with convertable roofs. Economies of scale and expert knowledge should be a winner for the right entrepeneur...as the prices charged for investigation and repairs for these issues are away to high.

By a process of elimination, I'm pretty sure the issue on my W209 is that the tensioning ropes (A 209 770 17 66) are stretched. I can find quite a lot of detail about replacing but only on the W208 - anybody know if the roof mechanics etc. are the same between models? I know that you had to twist a handle on the W208 unlike the W209 but can't see any difference otherwise. It looks a fairly easy fix - all comments welcome! Anybody performed this repair?
