Just bought a 2005 CLK 320. Bit confused why W209 & C209 seems to be used interchangeably as the model code. Which is the correct/most common term?

And i think i am right in saying the Convertible can sometimes be refered to as A209?

W209 = 2nd generation CLK
C209 = 2nd generation CLK coupé
A209 = 2nd generation CLK convertible

Simples!

But all CLKs ARE coupés.

There are two distinct body types, denoted by the C and A prefixes. W (standing for wagen or car) is the generic designation for the series as a whole.

Technically the SLK is a W170/1/2 but at it's only available as a roadster, it is generally referred to as R170/1/2. For most models in the MB range, W is used both for the range as a whole and to denote the predominant body style - usually a saloon/hatchback, but sometimes an estate (eg: M/ML, GL series).
