Dieselman, thanks for the info. Do you happen to know what pins on the ECU the various pins are connected to? Sorry to be a pain but as you might have gathered I haven't got a manual for this car yet

Soory, not got the info for that engine. Just take a flylead out from Pin 5 on the MAF connector.

Just to close this thread off, in case anyone else has the same issue - cause of this problem was not only the MAF, but also the left bank upstream oxygen sensor - MAF and oxygen sensor work together, thus failure of either give similar issues, but the oxygen sensor does show on a diagnostic readout
