W210 AC Problem.

I have an issue with the A/C system on the 1999 E 300 TD.
Recently the fan speed and A/C function have occasionally failed to respond to the control panel input.
The refrigeration system is ok, I don't suspect our friend the duo valve because it won't affect the cabin fan.
I'm thinking it may be the A/C control panel (it's the manual job with the rotary temp dials).
Anyone able to shed some light on this?

Could be a dodgy connection in the heater control unit, recently mine was stuck on Hot (passenger side) replaced the unit - £24 off eBay and its working fine again.

Thanks for that, how can I remove the heater controlls without breaking anything?
