The silver one.
I am seriously thinking of fitting an aux heater to my car either petrol or derv powered (seperate tank) as i am sick to my back teeth of being cold in the mornings and the screen wanting to freeze solid at the slightest oppurtunity, had one on my last few cars was pretty good but cant find any info, ie pics wiring diagrams or even anyone thats seen one on a W210.

I remember years ago seeing one on a diesel sprinter and this was an Eberspacher unit.

W210s have a Webasto unit:

I've never seen one fitted to a petrol car though.

I have not seen a petrol heater installed on a car but at another forum someone had it, installed on a car that was originally coming from Germany.

I'd be careful before going ahead. The aux heater unit itself is not enough because you need to be able to control it on and off, the water circulation pump needs to be controlled too (you should already have it) and the heater blower motor needs to be set running too.

I've had the AUX heater on several cars and even if I don't use it that often, I've hardly ever started it otherwise than from the radio remote. This too can be retrofitted but of course adds a bit of cost.

Is it a face lift or pre-face-lift car, it would appear a bit different.

MB has a "good" retrofit guide for this unit, even their workshops should be able to do it but if you have a shop more specialised for this, they could get the parts cheaper etc. If I remember right, the kit was not available any more and it may get expensive if you have to buy the control parts separately (I hope I remember this wrong, perhaps another car model).

Is a good source of the heaters and spares for them, everyone of these heaters I've ever sold has ended up on a boat rather than a car...

Have you tried contacting Webasto, as they do kits for aftermarket fit, like on the TD5 - I had one as well cracking piece of kit.

Are they fitted to all E320 cdi's??

I've never noticed one on mine , never seen it working either

I understood the comment being that MB uses Webasto for W210 cars IF the car has one.

Face lift W210 cars do not have the webasto heater standard but the electric heater instead.

Pre-face-lift W210 CDIs have the webasto heater standard, at least for the "colder part of Europe". But this is equipped to work while the car is driven, some extra parts are needed to make it work as a stationary heater.

Thanks for all the replies the ones i was looking at are either Eberspacher D4/5W or the Webasto thermotop.

I dont wish to fit it as part of the car i would like it as a totally stand alone unit so easy to remove when car sold, much easier to plumb and wire in ie only need to break into heater hose by rest water pump and a battery pos and neg feed, thats how i had the last one.

Anyone know where it was fitted under the bonnet originally?.

Nick thanks for the link good price but no water pump fitted and they are another £50.

DB thanks for the link i was looking everywhere on that site to try and find the diagrams never thought to look at rad section.

The problem with a standalone setup is that you cannot make the heater fan run when it should, at least if it is behind the CAN bus as I believe it is (at least it is on the W211). And the car should already have the water pump. If you can add the CAN-bus control unit, it would signal the pump via the bus to start running when needed. The water hoses should anyway be installed the same way. I don't see a difference for the car after the OEM heater was removed or an after market Webasto was removed.

I'd suggest you to find the MB retrofit guide for your car at least to be sure how the heater fan is connected. I could have looked at that too but I don't have the car details.

If the fan power supply from the regular fan control unit had a suitable diode inserted into the cable then a separate feed could be brought in from another supply unit/switch without causing unintended power supply issues.
Alternatively a relay could be used to similar effect.

Right got one:D Webasto thermo top benzine unit brand new from a disco 3.

Just got to get some plugs for the top of the heater, the fuel pump and a remote start unit and then the simple job of fitting it:rolleyes:

The wiring DM describes is how the eberspacher retrofit D4W was wired and i will probably do the same on this, but first want it on and working.

Does the top of this one look like the same as the thermo Top C (as fitted to the Disco TD5) ?? If so then go to a LR Breakers and see if you can cut the plugs of a scrapped Disco 2 as they were part of the standard loom :) Also the connector for the small fuel pump is underneath as well :D
Speak to a webasto dealer about the pump as then you'll get the right flow for the heater.

Also disable the internal motion sensors, otherwise the airflow will set the alarm off. :p

I miss my webasto thermo top from my X5 .. ahh those were the days :)

Heated car , heated seat and heated wheel :) bliss

Mark Doh i only had my TD5 for 3.5 years and you would think i would remember the plugs you describe:o , in my defence i did fit an eberspacher in that hole so covered the plugs up.

Yes it is a thermo top.

Dm was referring to your idea for the relay/diode.

Right got the new loom, timer and fuel pump rigged up and it runs a treat.

Heated up 10 litres of water in bucket in about 5 minutes flat impressed:)

Just got to fit it now.

A lot quieter than the eberspacher
