Hi guys, i have what looks like a nokia 6210 handset cradle in my E280, which is hooked up to the controls on the steering wheel.
Anyhow, my question is this....can i remove the cable from the current nokia cradle and wire a new cradle (for a different handset) to the existing wire, or do i have to change the wiring for a different cradle?
Reason i ask is because im not exactly the best electrician.
thanks,
Baz.

lol...thanks again mate....didnt get any replies on most merc forums wen i first joined (sometimes still dont, unfortunately- or maybe its just me :wallbash: ) so i always ask on 2 or 3 :thumb:

ok, so i finally got me a 6210....it works, but not as i thought it would...
For a start, it seems to charge, then the charging stops...which is probably loose pins on the cradle...
secondly, it doesn't seem to have any connection to the steering wheel controls. i still get "not available" when i try to press the car phone buttons on the steering wheel.
The cradle in my car has a wire going to it, and there's a small grey mic just next to the rear view mirror....u think this is an aftermarket system that just isnt connected to answer calls from the steering controls? and is there a way of connecting it this way?

thanks,
baz.

It is probably a Nokia HF100 handsfree kit , which was the proper Nokia kit for those phones back in the day and was a good kit with good audio performance . If the phone battery is already charged , it will only charge for a short time ( indicated by the battery dashes on the display chasing upwards ) .

It won;t work with steering wheel buttons , but you can set one of the menus in the phone to auto answer when in the cradle so that you don;t need to press any buttons at all .

The phone also has speed dials assignable to each button so that one-touch calling is possible ( although I would never initiate calls when driving , but that is a matter of personal choice ) .

Plenty of other makes , such as Bury , offer interchangeable cradles . If you have a Nokia kit you can update the cradle to one for some newer Nokias .

thanks for that. i am trying not to concentrate on the handset too long while driving, otherwise that's half the reason of having a hands free rendered useless, since its dialing/typing that takes your concentration off the road the most.
but i like the auto answer thing u mentioned..that's a good point.
changing the handset isn't an issue though. im happy to use this one...it's just the controls on the wheel i was trying to use.
another thing i should probably ask is that the aftermarket head unit fitted also isn't connected to the audio/volume controls on the steering, but the head unit does mute the music and have "tel" on its display during calls. so if it's possible to connect that to the car controls, im guessing its possible to get the phone controls working with that?
The head unit's a clarion system attached to a cd changer and sat nav system in the boot (i also have a SeViC head unit i may swap it over for since the Clarion sat nav is useless and frustrating to use).

all responses much appreciated :thumb:

Telephone muting is commonly available on lots of car stereos when used along with most carkits - it is simply a wire from the phone kit which goes to +12V during calls and connects to the corresponding wire on the stereo ( if this feature is supported ) . This was available long before steering wheel buttons and has no connection to them .

well, as dissapointing as that is, i appreciate the feed back and at least have my answer.
thanks mate.
