W210 diesel bad starter

Hi i have a W210 E class V plate 2000 320 cdi Avantgarde. Fitted new battery in winter (Varta big un) and Bosch glow plugs (forgot to ask garage for old ones though) I am experiencing poor starting first thing esp in cold weather.
Car runs on Shell fuel, and was serviced last year in October by MB mechanic.
When it does start after a lot of cranking (no throttle) it puts out quite a bit of smoke from the exhaust only on initial start up.

Any ideas what it might be ?? any advice welcomed the car has 136000 genuine miles on the clock and been regularly serviced to date.

Either an air leak into the fuel pipes or an injector leaking off too much.

Check for air bubbles in the pipes, if OK perform a leak off test. The smoke makes me err towards an air leak.

Any follow up to what the fix is? I am having a similar problem with my W210 320CDI.
