W210 E220 CDI Smoking and gear change

Hi guys,

This is my wife's car and as such I hardly ever drive it but I've done a 200 mile trip today and noticed a couple of things wrong the first being excessive smoke when accelerating and even from a standstill...i.e pulling out of a junction. The second is that there seems to be a problem with changing gear up especially from 4th to 5th and sometimes from 3rd to 4th when it seems to stick in the lower gear and means that revving to 4000 rpm is required to shift up...... even that is not successful sometimes when I have to manually select the next gear up, there appears to be no problems changing down. I think fuel consumption has increased a little too and am assuming that the reason for this is the extra revving that is going on.

The car has done 180k and drives well except for the two points mentioned.

Any help / suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Timster thanks for that....I've looked at changing the ATF guide and it looks complicated, anyone know of an independent in the North West (North Wales) preferably who could do this and what would be the approximate cost ?

I will give the Italian tune up a go....seems like a bit of a hill is required and near max revs in 3rd gear ??

I've also read that disabling the EGR can be beneficial...again is this a difficult job and any independents in the areas noted above that can do it..with approximate cost ?

Many Thanks.

Also check for a split intercooler pipe.

EGR shunt is not difficult, Dieselman has an excellent thread on this, there is alot more detail on the other side.

I would definitely get the ATF changed, you can do it yourself BlackC55 aka Olly has done a great guide on this. If you are not confident, expect to pay between £150 - £200 to have it done but go somewhere that will do it properly and drain the TC

this happens to me once a week where it sticks at 3rd gear and doesn't go to the 4th gear it only goes from 1st to 3rd but doesn't goes to 4th whatever high rpm it reaches.
does anybody knows the problem ? its 120000 miles

Get it to a MB specialist (Indy) and have them diagnose it. A gearbox oil change wouldn't hurt if it has not been done in the last 40k
