You may have damaged/crushed your exhaust pipe/ silencer or cracked the exhaust manifold meaning it could be partially blocked or leaking . You have to get the car up an inspection ramp and look for damage underneath with a bright light source I should mention the W210 E290 TD with the manual gearbox was never marketed in the UK as far as I know.

Jack it up and see what damage you've done first...

Edit: Graeme beat me to it.

Could be related to your exhaust problem or something else. I believe the E290 being an older engine has a mechnical injection system but will have various electrical sensors. One of them is giving out a fault code which in turn puts up the display on the dash. You need to find a garage with a fault code reader to plug in to the cars diagnostic socket to find out what's wrong. Fortunately with the E290 the electronics can be interrogated by many general purpose fault code readers so you don't have to go to Mercedes for this. This engine was also used in several Mercedes commercial vehicles/vans etc and your cheapest option might be a garage specialising in commercial vehicles. :dk:
