w210 e320 mercedes estate 2001
Hello to all

was a member years ago, i have recently got ( 2 weeks ago ) a 2001 w210 e320 cdi estate, all was going well till i started getting a issue with it sticking in gear, did want to move up the gears and last night it didn't go into reverse, anyway been to dealer and had codes reset and car was good for half a day and back to same issue, dealer said its more than lightly the gear box sensor located in the bottom of gearbox, my concern was, he said if we replace this part and the problem comes back it could be gearbox.
Dealer as quoted £ 530 for recon unit fitted. i have decided to do the job myself, new parts from mbd £ 320.
anyway on the way back home from garage, it was fine and working ok but went out today and back to no going above first gear again, have noticed it also makes and clunk when putting it into drive, not smooth like it was 2 weeks ago .
thing is, if it is the gearbox thats no good, could i be wasting my time and money, crap thing is i really need this car to work for work reasons

Help

Hi and welcome. The problem is very likely to be the speed sensor on the electroplate. It's very common and doesn't require a new gearbox. It can be done DIY if you are good with these things and have a very clean environment to do it in. The electroplate can be bought from ebay, some even supply as a kit (or used to) including oil and pilot bush (electrical connector).

Hi

have you checked the gearbox oil or do you have something that says it been changed recently ?
might be worth a quick check..

Hi wtfh, its been into merc specialist and had errors codes for the speed sensors, they checked the gearbox oil level and said it was good.
i have order the parts now so going to do the job myself this week, watched loads of you tube and im confident i can do the job, even brought a toque wrench today. Happy days

Hi bob, and thanks for replying, after watching you tube vids and seeing the two sensors on the board, over time they slop a bit, im sure now this is for sure the issue, all parts ordered now full kit ( febi ) parts apparently the same thing mbd use. i will make sure work bench is cleared to do this job.

again thank you

You're welcome and good luck! Yes, members have previously bought a febi kit and it was basically a genuine Mercedes part with the logo scratched off lol. It should bring your car back to life. 👍
