My 2001 E320 cdi has an irritating vibration at speeds from 70 up to about 90mph.

I've had it checked and my garage reckons its the diff. This is the first I've heard of a diff causing vibration normally when the bearing go in a diff it just develops a noise.

Anyways was wondering what's the best way to go about this. I could either buy a second hand one and hope for the best as I wont know its condition until it's in the car. Or I could put a bit extra money in and get the second hand diff rebuilt before swapping my current one out. If I go down the rebuild route does anyone know of a decent gearbox/diff specialists. Ideally in the north east (willing to travel).

I'd have thought it more likely to be the prop shaft rather than the diff itself. As you say, diffs usually make a noise when they're getting worn.

It could be the centre propshaft bearing/mount or universal joints. Diffs usually give plenty of warning before failing, grinding or howling noises. I would change garage. MB diffs are pretty robust.

Have you tried fitting different rear wheels to rule out a tyre defect?
Tried this vibration still there
