first thing most mornings the car wont start first time.it cranks then makes a whirring noise which gets loud and then dies.sometimes it dies and then comes back to life on its own.on the second turn its fine.if it does start the first time and you switch it off then it will happen the second time around.my indy hasnt heard the noise but he thinks its the starter motor.the thing is,it only happens when the car is cold ie:first thing in the morning.as soon as the car is warmed up you could start it a hundred times and there is no problem.if it were a starter problem would it not be evident all the time?

Maybe the starter solonoid has a problem when been left not uncommon you don't have to buy a new starter just have the old one repaired?

If your capable of taking it off and getting it repaired cheap job but if your paying a garage they will fit a new starter, they wont want your car sitting there for a 2x days.

sounds like the starter solenoid which is not engaging fully , i had a similar problem on a previous car and found one of the starter motor retaining bolt was slightly loose , after tightening it up all was well , have you looked under neath and felt if there is any play on the starter motor , if you do attempt to repair it yourself always disconect the battery first .

yup, sounds like the starter. if you keep using it that 'noise which gets loud' will destroy your ring gear too, trebling the bill.
