Has anyone replaced the thermostat on the W210 E320 CDI? How is it done please??

It really is a doddle, but you will need to take the oil filter top cover off to make it easier.
I replaced mine in about 30mins, at the same time as the water pump.

did you have to take the fan belt off to change the thermostat? or is it at the top of the engine and easy to get to ? I want to change mine before the weather starts to heat up again getting fed up with having to run the heater with all the windows open when stuck in traffic :o

no need for the belt to come off.
It's located (as you face the engine) on the right side at the front. Take the engine cover off and it's on the side of the block. the long thin hose that comes from the header tank goes to it.

another question sorry

sorry i forgot to ask how much is the thermostat? and also do you need any gaskets or sealants/ special hose clips? or anything that may snap off to buy that you wont get with the thermostat?

Me too. I had heard that a new thermostat housing is required. Is this so, or just the thermostat??

It's a complete housing. everything is in the box. cost should be about £45 inc vat. just be careful with the fuel lines that pas by, as they get a bit hard over time.

thanks :thumb:but do you use any sealant or do you get a gasket with it ?

OK. Got the thermostat to-day. "Thermostat Replacement for Dummies" would be useful. Anyone? Like, where do I start after taking the engine covers off? Do I need anything other than the new gasket and a new jubilee clip?

Thanks.

Hurry up

after losing all your tools on the drive and bleeding from every finger you will like me be crying and reaching for the petrol and matches :D Hurry up and do it then because i wanner know how its done lol :D

1. drain down the coolant - remove front bottom engine cover and on the passenger side there is a drain plug and just above there is an outlet for a length of hose to slide on so you can drain down without getting all over the drive.

2. take engine and manifold cover off
3. take oil filter top housing off
4. disconnect hoses from thermostat
5. disconnect electrical connector from sensor
6. undo the 3 bolts - these are the star sort and will need an star type socket (can't remeber the correct name for them)
7. pull away from engine and rotate the housing towards the front of the car and gently it will clear the pipes.
8. refit new thermostat in reverse order and refill coolant.

so from that all i have to do is snap off 3 bolts split the hoses break the electrical connector and sensor and probably snap all the brittle plastic diesel pipes in my way then shout at the missus then run down the pub (joke):D On the serious side thanks for that i now know what i need and will have a go at it at the weekend thanks very much :thumb:

Thanks Proser. No gasket sealer needed then?

That's such a handy post - exact same procedure for C220 CDi (W202).
Thanks very much - job done in 40mins.

Thanks for sharing this information it is very useful and just what we want :-)

Hi,

just changed the thermostat on my W210 E320cdi thanks to your post. Just one question where should the temp guage sit normally and when should the fans kick in? My temp got halfway between 80 and the next line with none of the rad fans on the out side starting up, is this ok?

Many thanks

jon
