W210-e320cdi - manifold gasket

Hello, just had AA out to check knocking sound from engine......road tested but couldn't replicate sound to be honest...... It is there but weather noise was loud.....anyway he is convinced after checking under bonnet and hard acceleration we can see smoke / fumes / air escaping just beside the alternator he noticed it was all black......but thinks a leak at exhaust manifold gasket......would this cause the car to loose power and almost like acceleration is not working....would it also cause what sounds like hissing sound when accelerating....also a tapping / knocking sound when under pressure..... Any advice tips would be very welcome.....I am taking it it garage tomorrow

Does the car rev above 3000rpm?

the hissing could be the turbo whine which could be normal

Best bet is to get the codes read, from a STAR machine if possible

Will a star machine pick up things like manifold gasket leak

I'm not sure so cannot comment but I would mention it to an indy whilst being diagnosed and get the second opinion on it
