My W210 has just started this problem. When braking, the pedal feels a littel softer than normal and you can fel the odd click through the pedal. then, when close to stopping, the ABS system kicks in (you can hear it and feel it) and applies greater pressure without me pushing harder on the brake pedal. This doesn't happen all the time, but is quite frequent.

Any thoughts on what this might be?

Thanks

Probably a fault with the ABS rings being corroded. The live wheel speed data needs to be checked with a Star on road test.

Do they have ABS rings these days? I had a look, and the wheel speed sensor looks to be in the hub towards close to the bearing.

Yes, rings on the rear hubs which can (nowadays) be replaced.

However, having had this on a similar car, it was the ABS pump which had to be replaced.

The rear ABS rings are on the drive shaft.
Replaced one of ours about 18 months ago.
If you look on e-bay, you can buy replacement ABS reluctor rings for these cars.
The drive shafts are ferociously-expensive.
Fortunately managed to get a second-hand one.
