the two fans in front of the rad are running all the time is this correct ?

two in front of the rad and one (visc) in the engine bay

Mine only run once in awhile, and only when the AC is on, like Olly asked. But certainly not all the time.

The two fans in front of the rad start up when you switch the air con on.

Mine dont, think they only come when, 1 ac is on and ,2 when ambient air temp is high enough to require the extra cooling.

You're almost certainly correct, Lynall.
The E300TD never gets hot enough for the electric fans to cut in for that reason.
Although, I suspect that is how it will probably work in a hot climate.

On my old Type 126, the electric fan came on exactly as you say ...
1. When air con switched on
2. If you left the engine idling on a hot day, the temp gauge would rise and then the electric fan would start to correct this.

Cheers.

To refer to the original question from ALPHABM ...
If the fans are running all the time when the AC is not on, then the temperature sensor is most likely defective.
