W210 Key Trouble

Hi folks have a friend with a late pre facelift W210, which is giving some troubles with the key. It wont lock or unlock the car through the buttons. Have done the simple infa red test through a camera and it does show the white light so I would think theres nothing mechanically wrong. Im thinking its lost its memory maybe and needs re-syncing, does anyone know how this is done or have any other tips or advice ?

Have you replaced the batteries? although you can see the light, perhaps its too weak to work?

Car starts with the key and the batteries where replaced fairly recently. Also the red light flashes once everytime a button is pushed

No power needed to start the car, the power for that comes from the ignition switch.

The radio signal interfaces with the reciever inthe interior light module. The infra-red is for the line of sight operation to the sensors in the door handles for the comfort features of window operation.

If both keys won't work it must be the car reciever faulty.

if it starts the car but will not unlock or lock it ..will the alarm set and unset if it does..try the central locking pump it may have given up the ghost

Or, check the bottom of the key itself, has the red plastic lense become damaged?

£120 for a new key, but if your lucky you will get one of those brand new shiney ones

Your car has RF for long distance locking via the rear screen, and infra red for close range through the door handles

I did mention that but it would save the user a fair bit if any methods could be attempted to get this one working first. Can these keys not be re-synced ?

Ill ask him about the spare key, all I know is that he is useing the Flat key to unlock and lock the car at the moment

The key at the bottom where the red bit is looks fine, no cracks just some minor scratches in that plastic but nothing serious that I would think could stop its function.

Ordering a new key will ovbiously be the last attempt

If he only has one key, then it obviously would be difficult to test with another key but also then he should immediately anyway purchase a new key.

The remote door locks work both with IR and RF, the convenience functions only work with IR.

Does the W210 have IR receivers on both front door handles? Could test, perhaps the RF receiver and one of the IR receivers has an issue (some cars have issues with the RF antenna, the car then does not lock and unlock from as far as normally).

It they IR lock unlock on the nearside there will be a little black window in the handle

I would think that if he is doing this his alarm/ immobiliser will not be activated.

I got a replacemant key for £59 a couple of years ago from my local dealer, then another one for free because they ordered it again thinking I hadn't had it yet.

The key now unlocks/locks & opens the boot from the remote from a distance and up close, however after the first two times of starting the car it would no longer start, meaning the key would just not turnover anymore ? Surprising as the remote key functions now work at there best. Any ideas to whats up now ?

Not quite clear,are you saying that the key turns the ign on but will not crank the car

Wont do either ! Upon the first two times when it did start the car and allow me to turn the key it made the noise that it usually makes when you insert the key in the ignition, but it no longer did this afterwards aswell.

New key it will be then as this key has pretty much had it, After a day its lost its memory again, thought it must be needing a new set of batteries tried that still no luck, so a new key it shall soon be !

Make sure you request a new style key!
