W210 Key Trouble

Hes still talking about the key in the orignal post isnt he?

Sorry I missed that, often when that key does not turn it is the EIS switch that needs to be replaced. All documents always say the lock and not the key needs replacing. This is very hard and could be expensive if he has no spare key.

the lump in the pic cost £450

Thanks television for the pictures of the lump unit, thing is how can I determine what exactly is wrong as in total at the moment there are only two keys, the non functional proper key and the flat key. When inserting the flat key in the ignition it makes a noise and allows me to turn the key and start the car, when I switch off the engine and pull the key out it makes a noise again. It dont make any of this noise making when I insert the dead key and therefore dont allow me to turn the key. The strange thing is that in my cuzins W210's it makes NO noise whatsoever when inserting and removing the key !

The one in the picture is a 210 switch. As you have one key that works lets discount the switch, and assume that you just need one key.

Regarding the buzz, its quite possible that one of the ferrite cores has come loose then the could explain it. Its nothing to worry about.

The noise is tha steering lock winding out on insertion and back in on removal. Strange that your cousins car doesn't do it.

gurpz says that the noise is there when he inserts the key, not turning it to release the lock, it will be the DAS recognition circuit that allows the key to turn that is making the noise. ferrite is used to amplify FR signals

Thats correct only when inserting it and removing it. I have two cousins who both have W210's non of which make this noise . By the way to clear any confusion the key pictured in the first post is the actual now dead key !

The DAS 3 should recognise the key insertion and release the steering lock. It's possible that this has changed but certainly for W210 late '90's this is correct.

Key insertion on mine (DAS) does not release the steering lock, only key 1 and I believe this has always been the case. I have the same switch. I have not seen a car yet where inserting the key releases the steering lock

When you say 210 switch, what exactly do you mean im a bit confused

Next time you get to see a pre-facelift W210 with DAS 3 take a look. It will release the steering lock on key insertion.
This may apply to all W210.

I thought your car had keyless go, in which case how does it release then?

It may do so but one thing is certain the noise is not heard on other facelift/pre-facelift W210's that have working keys , well atleast the ones I have had a look in

With keyless go the steering lock does not release until the ignition is on. Keyless go is an extra and the normal DAS switch is on the car. You get 4 keys, 2 cards and 2 keys.
It also states in most handbooks that the pressure may need taking off the steering lock by moving the steering wheel when starting and not by just inserting the key, in any case nothing is active when the key is in the lock bút not turned. All that happens is that the car recognises the key, and that circuit is activated, but nothing else

It deffinatly does not have the keyless go option as it originally only came with 2 keys and a flat key.

Is the steering lock working on those cars? The switch only detects lock withdrawl so it could be jammed in the off position.

Yes it works exactly as I have been saying.

It is always the switch that fails on the 20 odd cars that I have been involved with, and never once the steering lock.
