Hi, W210 3.2CDI - runs fine when first started then after a few minutes looses power & won't accellerate properly - still runs but won't kick down.
Any ideas? I've changed the MAF but seems the same.

cheers
Chris

Faulty or blocked EGR Valve ?

There are alot of threads regarding these failing on the 320 CDI engine

+1 ^^ it causes a plausibility error with the MAF and intermittent limp mode. I cleaned mine in the summer and thought that it had cured the problem but eventually had to replace it as it was not closing off properly. If you do take it off to clean it make a not of the part number ......... MB took 4 goes at getting me the correct part!!

How easy is it to remove the EGR valve?
I've got a 200 mile trip to take on Monday - I could have a look tomorrow in the sub zero temperature if it's a relatively straightforward job.

cheers
Chris

Hi, it might be an EGR fault, or many other things. The best way forward is getting the fault codes checked really.

I know some garages can charge a fortune for this, but others (like us) will often give a free appraisal of a fault like this - it does not take long to read out the codes.
Might be worth a ring round your local Mercedes specialists?

If it does turn out to be the actual EGR valve itself, Mercedes charge approx £500 for them! There are other ways to solve the issue however, which avoid great expense.

Tried my code reader but no codes stored :(
on the positive side just travelled 180 miles & got 46 MPG :)

Yes that threw me too when the EGR failed I got tremendous fuel efficiency, seems back to front.

I normally get slightly better than that on a run :)

Egr
Maf
Inlet port shut off motor or failed butterflies in inlet
Boost leak

Basically you Ecu see's a fault after driving and puts the car in limp home mode.

I assume this is the EGR valve circled in red?

It does appear to move when the engine is revved.

Get the codes read otherwise it will be a guessing game.

You are miles away, miles and miles.

That is the turbo, bolted to the exhaust manifold.
The EGR valve however is bolted to the inlet manifold, and has no external parts that move.

You need help, ideally a friendly Mercedes expert who can help read out those fault codes to give you a starting point - at the very least.

Had the codes read:

P1189 inlet port shutoff
mean anything to anyone?

Thanks for that slightly patronising answer.
As EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation - I assume it connects to the exhaust pipe at some point - & the one on my last C250D was next to the turbo by the exhaust pipe/manifold.

I've been looking for a friendly Mercedes expert for about 10 years now - can you recommend one in the staffs/west mids area??

Yeah, sorry about the bad attitude there, just frustrated with trying to steer you towards getting those codes checked!
My bad.

Moving on, you did get the codes checked (good), and we have a lead.
The fault relates to the inlet manifold shut off flaps, nothing to do with the MAF sensor, EGR valve etc, so it was worth doing!

Probably the motor is jamming, or the linkage has become detatched. Have a visual check of it (located under the inlet manifold), and check the linkage to all the flaps to see if it is all attatched.

Read here for a little info on the system, and the fault code... http://arwit.pl/TDImage.aspx?a=PG_SI_0071_EN_WEB&b=0005&c=PDF

No problem at all - I'm just as frustrated trying a: to get the car from my wife, b: trying to find someone who can read codes properly & c: someone who doesn't try & charge 2 hours labour just to plug their computer in!!!!!
Anyway, moan over, just realised there as a few variations of the code - mine was P1198 inlet port shutoff M55.
Is there any vacuum control to this motor as I have a buzzing sound coming from the vacuum pipes in a couple of places when the engine is turned off.

Sorry but it's very difficult trying to describe/look at things without the car (wife has it again)

cheers
Chris
