W210 or w211

I'm reading lots of expensive repairs with airmatic or swap out for spring kits

So my only issue really is check rust listen for usual suspension knocks n bangs the one key

So not airmatic on w210 pheumatic

Nope not airmatic

Rust is the main killer, also check subframes and spring perches for excessive rust. These can be rectified but the former are bigger and more costly jobs. Engine covers off, check for 'black death'. Not as bad as it sounds, can be done DIY just get it super clean. The display pixels are another easy fix, ribbons available on ebay cheaply.

The display fine look in link in one of the comments

But not airmatic and as long as it levels is a good start as for subframe nothing mentioned on mots would think it crop up there generally but will shine a light defo get engine cover out of the way though thanks for help

Hi,
you asked questions back in post *12, some of which have already been answered.
Elegance is a "comfort car" rides on 16" wheels and is not lowered like the Avantegarde model. The base model was called a "Classic ". A sunroof was an optional extra and in my old 300TD I fitted a Blaupunkt DAB radio, you can fit what you want, or is the radio in your present car better, if so swap it over if you want.
Abbs --clk320 has provided a copy of the data card so you can see what you are buying before you get there. Looking at the spec and the mileage and providing the rust is minimal then it might be a bargain, 146,000 is no mileage at all for these. But be realistic, you are not going to get a £3000.00 car for £700. Take a piece of carpet with you, a cheap bright LED torch and give it a look over and under, take a friend with you for a 2nd opinion. You mention the under engine covers on the MOT, this is standard jargon to protect the MOT tester as he is not allowed to remove the protective and "aerodynamic" shields. On the nearside ...passenger side... underneath, there are two steel pipes going the length of the vehicle, these are the hydraulic pipes for the rear Self Levelling Suspension, these tend to go very rusty, as do brake pipes unless they have been treated. For future times when you get a 211 ! , Airmatic gives you a very comfortable ride, no need to be frightened of it. You will have a normal 722.6 auto box, there is no Tiptronic , it is not on the data card. Talk to the chap that owns it, see what he has to say about it. Make sure that the aircon is on and wind it down to cold and see how chilly it gets. You are fortunate in already owning one of these so you will know it is supposed to drive.
Looking at the photos,it seems to have either had 2 doors or a wing as the paint is not matching, despite the sun on it, looking at the next pic, looks like it has had a wing, metallic silver is a horrible colour to match properly. Rear tailgate seems ok, but lift it up and look at the seams. Looking inside, it seems to be idling at a correct speed and even the outside temp gauge works. Interior looks clean and tidy, shame it is not leather !, and if you say it has a Parrot fitted then that is a bonus.
It would be interesting to look at the receipts he has for the past work.
Just do not go buying a rust bucket!. I hope all goes well on your visit.

Steve

Yes self levelling rear suspension was standard on the estates. There is a hydraulic reservoir under the bonnet which fills the system. There are two spheres at the back which can eventually fail. I'm sure these were supposed to level the car once started so check for that

The 210's SLS system is the Achilles heel of running a S210 on a budget, as most are now.

Problems:
The 2 spheres are shot. The low fluid level tells you this. £120 plus labour.
Leaks from rusted SLS pipes. Need replacing, hard access! £££.
Leaking / weeping Sachs rams (aka the rear shocks) .... about £400 per side.

Checking properly for rot on a viewing just isn't realistic because it hides beneath all the plastic covers - for the same reason they scrape through MOT's.

My last E300TD actually looked pretty smart because it has been almost entirely resprayed under warranty with many new panels but underneath OMG!

Without question, I would go for a W211. At least if you get stung for a something like an SBC pump, once it's fixed, it's fixed. Keeping a W210 structurally sound is like painting the forth bridge.

Tiptronic not really worth worrying about anyway, its just the slow and clumsy precursor to paddle shifters, kind of works OK but I you wont be missing much on a car without it. My w210 has 225000 miles on so far, has had work but still drives well.

Hi anyone find the spec or any info on clk 2003 sn53ovr owner says it's reliable no faults

I'm going to see this first thing in morning

Or Clk320x can u get me spec on after mentioned clk reg

Well caution to the wind and bought a 2003 270cdi clk c209 advantgard 152000 looked its got a full not all Mercedes but up to 85000 then there after reputable garages such cornerstone Cardiff etc full service history thousands spent on repairs and has had things in last three year like 4 arms and brake lines with receipts gu showed me his reason for sale a 430 d bmw with private plate said this car was his mums but isn't his cup of tea there is rust underneath but hey not major for a 15 year old car I removed covers and no Black death even a receipt for change of seals 2017

And after looking in reiptz a job costing 535 pounds in 2017 to replace couple manifold gaskets May point to having the flaps cleaned egr etc the young guy 23 didn't seem to know much

Small problems little sticky handbrake and aftearket stereo which when I try to control volume horn beeps don't know much about this and a crack/smash to the driver wing mirror no lights clunk's drives superb averaged 38 on way home couple scratches here n there but

All I can say at moment for 750 pounds I'm chuffed

I'm hoping so going to go view new years day c wat the other is like I want at very least to swap the ugly wheels on estate over for my amg rims and new toyo proxies lol at very least
My 1998 E class has 67000 on the clock could be useful. Got it up for £700

Another vote for this, ^^^^ @ £700 it is cheap motoring especially if you can get it through a couple of MOT'S before the rust finally gets to it.

Steve.
Asking £700 for mine with 67000 on the clock, last MOT no advisories, mechanically sound, rust round the arches,
