Hi, I have noticed my headlight not self levelling as it should, i have forgotten whether it should dip up than then level down. or start up and then adjust upwards, can someone kindly tell how this works?:dk:

I now have a beam that seems to look for UFO's  and I'm not sure what it could be.

Where do I check, or is this a common issue or what would be the remedy?

I have put the car up against he wall and beam seems to be at the same point upon start up without moving.:(

There is a headlamp self levelling device mounted towards the rear - p/n A0105427517. On my d in law's car the lever which attaches this to the chassis had rusted off and was hanging loose. Suggest a glance underneath to begin. It's connected by a cable running forwards. That would be my next check.

As above there's a sensor front and rear. Usually the rod linking the sensor to the rear axle breaks (ball joint). This rod costs about £10...the part number is 2103280934. I know this because I am looking at a spare one I have as I type this. The number above ( A01054257517) is for the sensor...you will not need this.

Hi,
The headlights are at their lowest point at rest, when turned on they should go to the highest point of their travel, then all the way down, then back up to the position set by the Auto-levelling.

Thanks for the info.
My thoughts are also that the headlights would go up and then down.

This I have not seen happen so does this mean I need to get the rod checked as the headlights are lined fine when I face the wall.

Yes, get down just in front of the rear offside wheel. Look under and you should see the rod hanging free.

Hi,
The auto levelling is not just done from the rear wheel but the front wheel as well, both on the O/S of the car.

I think I did mention that in my first post, I'll just check...yes, I did.

Yes I was aware you mentioned the front one in your post but I was just pointing out that the link on the front is just as likely to have snapped as the rear one, so the O/P should,nt just limit himself to looking at the rear link.

Hey guys thanks for the info. I have looked at the rear ofside wheel and saw this.

I forgot to mention that i went to a local garage prior to me posting this thread and said my lights don't look right, he stood in front of the car and checked the level of the headlights by measuring where they point on his legs and said they are fine, he then got me to sit in the boot and get out to see if they moved but they didn't again he said they are fine and only move once the car is moving.

my impression as that they should adjust before I move?

anyway I told him to look under and have a look for any sensors, he didnt but he said they are fine its only my imagination.

So I come on here and hey presto you guys show me a new light, now the question is do I go back to him and say check it again and let him work it out or tell him where to check or go somewhere else?

one of my friends mate can do this ( who is away on holiday) or another who actually work for a merc specialist who apparently can get it fixed by them.

So will it be a simple change the rod over and the lights will automatically adjust and start working as they should or do they need dealer assistance to get them to reset or something?

Yes, the rod is clearly broken...once fixed everything will work. What else would you imagine could be wrong...note the part number I gave above.

You could take it back to the garage and have the satisfaction of showing him he's wrong...but life's too short.

I wanted to say a BIG Thank you guys :thumb: and renault12ts for you help on this.

I managed to find a part from Mercedes in Aylesbury they had 2 in stock, so there is 1 still left if anyone needs one.

I got it changed and the old had its screw joint broken.

the headlights are now pointing down on the road however there is no movement apon start up.:dk: so not sure if the headlight settings is correct.

I parked the car in front of the house and when I start up the car and turn the headlights on there is no movement but when I leave the lights on and turn off and then turn on the car there is a slight movement up and down momentarily in the middle of the headlight, I can also hear a motor like noise which I think is from the headlight movement.

The headlights never start at the bottom and then go up and and then down again as they should?:(

is there something else I need to check and get fixed?

If they are pointing where they should then everything is ok...forget about them.

It sounds like they have had a possible fault before and someone has messed about with their alignment exactly what not sure. Possibly need the levelling system calibrated, which can only be done on STAR.
Thinking about it, it could now simply be that the levelling motors have become disconnected from the reflectors in the headlights, they are only push fitted on plastic ball type socket.
