Hi All

has anybody any experience of plugging ain a cheap four digit led/digital fault code reader to a year 2000 E240 2.6V6 - the sort you get from ebay for £40ish - this type of thing - ebay number 250485341236

My car has the round socket in the black box under the bonnet, so the ebay thing would need a rectangular 16 pin to round socket converter lead.

just driven 1000 miles to france and back and 10 miles from home the orange engine light came on - car works fine though - it has done about 83,000 miles now.

Last diagnosis at the garage a couple of months ago found crank sensor faulty - replaced - but also suggested the catalytics were low on performance.

So looking for a quick plug in at home to see whats's going on.

Anybody tried this? - Thankyou for any light anybody may shed on this

Look for u581 ive got one pretty good also does live data and easy to use.

With the u581 you can see live sensor output ie the ox sensors so you can see how fast or slow they are switching, whereas with just a plain reader you cant see any of this.

Pre cat sensor o2s11 readings should change quite a bit whereas post cat sensors readings change a lot less which show the cats are doing the business.

You also have the socket under the dash drivers side, mine has and its a 2001 so must be the same.

I got mine from e bay £69 iirc but another member (stevesey) got his from amazon cheaper than mine!

my year 2000 has no under dash plug - searched high and low for it - so only the round multi pin job in the black box under the bonnet - so any ideas if the U581 works with this (assuming I get a round pin to square converter lead).

I'll have a look on Amazon see what I can get.

I am guessing that you will need this cable

I dont know if it will work but looks as though it should

Yep cheapo cable works a treat on mine £10 iirc, was several months before i realised i also had the 16pin connector!

So if year 2000 hasnt got it and mine has it must be some sort of crossover period to the std 16 pin sockets that all cars now have.
