I drive an 03 w211 E220CDi. Recently, when pulling out to overtake on motorways I've experienced a partial loss of power, meaning I have to pull over and stop the car. While the engine keeps running, it won't rev over 2000-2500 rpm and refuses to kickdown. After I stop the car and engine and restart it, the problem is gone. Anyone have any ideas what's wrong, what I need to do to get it sorted, and how much its going to hurt my wallet?

what sort of speed is that happening and are there any faults appearing on the dash? you may need to get it plugged into star diagnostics to get the fault codes read, the car could be in limp mode due to safety or it could be the MAF sensor

Its happening at 50-60ish mph and there are no faults on the dash - none in the scroll down menu either. As a bit of a amateur at this, what is star diagnostics and what is a MAF sensor? Any help you can suggest would be useful when it comes to getting it sorted.

have you had the car serviced from MB in the last two years if you have then you need to call mobilo life on 00800 17777777 and they will get the recovery van out to you within 1 hour and diagnose the fault on your car. I think your car is in limp mode as there maybe a fault. I`m very surprised there is no fault showing on assyst

The car has been done by independents for the last couple of years, so maybe I'll take it to a dealer for a check up. I don't know whether the independants have the same diagnostic kit, but dont want any major damage to come about if there's something wrong. Out of interest, its due for a Service E in 5000 miles, at which point it will be on about 57000 in total. What does this entail?

Sounds like mass air flow sensor- not very expensive to fix.

Stop guessing.

It sounds like it has gone into "Safe Mode". The engine will only rev to 3000rpm. It needs to go on a Star machine to assess fault, it could be anything engine related from Turbo fault (as mine was) to something simple.

You won't know until you get it checked out, but get it done soon as it is dangerous on motorways when this happens.

This has happened about 5 times to me in the last two years. Local MB haven't been able to trace the problem, I'd be interested to hear the outcome.

Me too. Traced to the pressure sensor on the inlet manifold. About £25.00 iirc and easy to change. That was six months ago or so and so far so good. As you say CF.....5 times in two years is difficult to pin down.
Part No has been changed many times over the years so indicating a possible production/design problem? :dk:

Thanks Druck
I'll give that a try for £25. Once you stop turn off and on again the problem goes away and you forget...until it happens again!

^ Used to happen to me after stopping for tea at some motorway services or other. Oddly enough, the last time at Killington Lake.;) I got to the point where I could 'key' the thing without stopping and the fault would always disappear. Pain in the butt when you're trying to accelerate to traffic speed with a caravan on the back. Is yours a V6? On the 320 straight you can see the sensor below the fuel filter N/S.

Part No for a S6 is A0061531428 (I think!)

These are EXACTLY the circumstances of my fault. Yes mine is the V6...serves you right for coming south of the border without the correct papers! :D
