My garage says the timing chain is sometimes noisy on start up on my 2006 V6 3.0 CDI and so needs replacing.

Should I change the sprockets at the same time?

Thanks

I would personally seeing as it all going to be taken apart anyway.

How many miles has it done.

Has it got correct oil in it as iam sure the tensioner works on oil pressure. Would of thought these last the life of the car with regular services.

As HB, how many miles has the car done?

Have you had a second opinion?

I was speaking to my Indy, he's never done a chain on a merc engine.

Thanks Guys.

Cars done 198k FSH always serviced with correct C3 low SAPS fully Syn.

There is a small oil leak at the oil cooler seals which will be sorted at the same time. At no time has the car shown up that it needs more oil. Surely not enough to affect the tensioner.

Car shows no fault codes/issues (incl low oil pressure/level) but sometimes doesnt start first turn of key. When it does you can hear noise from front of engine. No sound after that.

Local MB Indy is well known to me, trusted and has good reviews....

Is there a way to check chain tension is ok without getting the whole thing out?

I have changed plenty of timing chains on v6, cdi engines. Always rattle on start up

No need to renew any sprockets

Thanks for your reply. In your experience might that cause delayed firing when cold?
