W211 7g transmission oil change question

Stil a bit unsure of refilling amount, what if my transmission was overfilled. When all the draining is complete, sump is in place with new gasket and torque converter drain plug refitted how much fluid should I pump in before starting up car. I have been trying to locate w1ghtys right up for 7g oil replacement but cannot find it, if you read this W1ghty please send link.

It’s on page 1 of this thread

If you overfill it , the excess ATF runs out because of the plastic tower in the sump drain hole . I would add a bit more than I drain out so you can clearly see it running out at the correct level and temperature .
Its a right pain if you get the box up to temp and you haven’t added enough ATF so it doesn’t run out properly before slowing to a trickle .

Yes you are never sure how much trickle is the right level, when I did mine it was a gentle trickle and the car has ran perfectly with smooth gear changes ever since.

Ok pal thanks. General consensus is I should get 9lt in overall give or take.

And the refill procedure leaves a lot to be desired surely a dipstick is the most sensible solution, even for regularly checking during the cars lifetime. Maybe too much thinking 🧐 went on.

I think the the dip stick tube on the 5g was causing transmission failures... especially when the red seal wasn't replaced once broken to check ATF level. 'Mechanics' poured all sorts of things into it .....

You can drain it cold without issue , but the TC drain plug is tiny . Depending on how long that would take to drain cold I would think it would speed up massively if it was hotter ?? Maybe run the car for 15/20 mins .
This was my first attempt at doing the job
One thing that's bothering me w1ghty when the oil temp reaches 45deg and you are checking the oil level for the last time is this done with engine running, I believe you did this with engine running, but I've seen videos where people have turned off engine and then checked surely this way there would be more oil in sump.

Re the leaking sump are you sure that it just needs a new gasket or is it possible that the sump has been overtightened and distorted?

I have no idea at the moment but will check when it's off.

You have to check the level with the engine running and the temp at 45 degrees, the car has to be perfectly level also.
The difficulty is to determine when a it’s dribbling or still flowing.

Thanks for clarifying. Hopefully that's everything cleared up 😉. Only thing is to work out how I can clean the foam lined undertray which is soaked in oil and weighs 3 times what it should and I'm sure it's sagging slightly, but one thing at a time 😁

Well I've got about 8.5 lt oil out in total. Going back soon to finish off. I was wondering if I should put anything on sump gasket or leave it bone dry. Being a heating engineer on rubber o rings and gaskets I usually smear a bit of silicone grease but not sure in this case as it was leaking previously.

Anyone should I fit dry or lubricate 🤔

Mine went on dry, just degreased all the surfaces. The bolts are not tightened up tight so I guess it makes a really good seal.

All done gasket went on dry thanks. Didn't get as much oil in as came out. Got over 9lt out got in about 8 1/4lt. made a bit of mess it's a good job I had plenty of cardboard down. But all in all job went well and thanks to everyone 👍

Did you check level at 45 degrees?
You should have put in at least 9 litres in, especially if you already had a leak from the original amount of fluid.

I put in 9lt. The I let temp get to 45deg kept engine running Opened adapter and got about 3/4lt back out before the flow reduced.

I found oil absorbent clothing helped so as I rolled around I cleaned up as I went :) .
Good job buddy !
