I left my 6 year old W211 on my drive for two weeks whilst away on business. When I came back the rear nearside tyre was almost up inside the wheel arch, almost as if the suspension had failed. I have airmatic, which I love and use a lot.

I started the car to a warning of "car too low" but it rectified itself and corrected the ride height.

When I turned the ignition off, the car lowered itself to the state as described above. i.e. Tyre inside wheel arch.

Clearly there is an airmatic problem, and I fear something expensive...

Does anyone have any pointers pls ?

Thx, SargeBenz

Its seams like your rear air bag has split on that side , there not cheap , a few hundred each .

Any decent specialist can do it.

I suspect the airbag has a leak at the top where the pipe goes in. It is quite a common issue.

There easy to change , iv done a few on estates , it will need to be done at a Dealer or indy with STAR .

Just an update....

The dealer diagnosed the problem as needing a replacement "Air Spring Bell". The price for this single component was 550 pounds

I hope they dont go in pairs....

Thx again for the guidance.

Hello all, I´m new to this forum. I just want to ask Shorty if You have any simple how to list or procedure of changing rear airmatic spring w211 320 cdi estate. I´m going to do it this Friday, I have a guy with Star, who will help.

Do I really need lower whole rear part and subframe or is there any easier way to do it? Thanks a lot in advance.

I can not use PM as a newcomer so here is my mail: [email protected]

Thank you very much

If its only the rear air bag than all that needs removing is the shock and rear wheel and inside the car , the side boot covers , this is to access the top mounting of the air bag . If the air bag has been bough new there will be an instruction leafet for fitting . Its important to set the angle of the bottom of the air bag where it bolts to the lower suspension arm . These merurments are listed on the leafet .

Hello, I have the instructions with measurements, that is ok.
I want to ask You how to release the air from the bag and how to pump it bag after. Is this done via Star or manually via some valve and in car compressor respectively?

Thanks a lot

The air is released and pumped via STAR .
Using STAR , when the the control unit , Airmatic , under the heading Acuations ,then use Release pressure , and fill strut , to release and increase the pressure in the air bag .
Make sure not to let the car sit down on its wheels until the air bag is filled . If you let the car down with the strut/s low or empty , when the compressor starts the car wil lift , but this can damage the air bags .

I have a Air suspension problem with my w211, the suspension is not working at all. Could this be a fuse or relay? Can any one help
