Just fitted a Nokia car kit because my E320CDI doesn't have the factory prewiring for the telephone.

All works fine but I have not got the mute to work. Can anyone cofirm that this should be connected to the top left pin on the 4 pin plug of the audio gateway fitted in the boot.

I understand that Mercedes sometimes run a yellow wire from this pin and leave it under the carpet on the pasenger side footwell.

Any advice before I start taking the trim apart?

I have just finished connecting this "audio mute" and it works fine.

There is a yellow wire on the 4 pin plug at the top of the AGW in the boot. I traced this wire through the car and it is left un-terminated in the wiring loom behind the sill plate on the front passenger side of the car. I simply connected this to the audio mute wire on the Nokia phone kit and every thing now works fine. RADIO/MP3/CD/TV and DVD all mute automatically when the phone rings or when you make a call. I guess it will work for any after market car kit with an audio mute facility.

With the Mercedes Bluetooth only weeks away for Europe then it seems like an old world solution for a modern phone.

Miro,

Please expand - what is the "Merecedes Bluetooth"

Yes, but it costs about £1000 less!

Steve, when you say the mute works, does the sound also come through the car speakers or have you had to fit an additional speaker? Presumably you have also used the Nokia mic rather than the MB pre-wired one?

Everything is Nokia - including mic and external speaker. I understand there will be an audio lead available shortly to use the car speakers.

Basically its totally independent of the COMAND but when the phone rings it does mute the audio. Without this I frequently missed calls as I didn't here the phone ringing.

You can get these kits now for less than £70 and it takes about 2 hrs to fit including finding the audio mute lead in wiring loom running behind the passenger door sill - very cheap compared to MB prices!

I would love to get the phone fully integrated with the COMAND via bluetooth but my dealer (MB Bridgend, South Wales) claims to know nothing about it - even when I gave them the part number(s) - B6 787 5838/39

I guess we will have to wait for the kit to be offcially launched

When someone gets a "criminal" quote it doesnt mean that the job really costs 1000 pounds. It simply means that there are people out there asking for that much.

I am quite happy to come to the UK and do E-Class phone upgrades to UHI for 600 pounds + cradle. Since the Bluetooth option clips into the UHI component then its looking like real value IMHO.

Takes a whopping 3 hours to finish in a car park.

If its not Mercedes then the phone book is limited to your personal memory. Since I find that E-class voice control is anything but lame then you sacrifice OEM options for generic phone kits which make full integration so rewarding.

My S211 has an integrated phone which works perfectly. My wife's B Class did not have a phone and so the local dealer, MB Luxembourg, fitted a Nokia Bluetooth kit for €400, if I remember correctly, which is about 275 pounds.
The quality though is nowhere near as good as that of the integrated system on the S211.

Im quite certain that the dealer doesnt want to cut the roof lining since it is glued onto the metal roof. In order to fit OEM phone to B class you must have blind faith or piano wire to cut the glue.

Apart from that there is no factory harness yet for the phone part. So it is nearly laughable to try the OEM process.
