Full replacement Side Mirror

Hi,
After my adventure in dismantling the left side mirror to repair the warning like I found it bit difficult for me.
Saying that and since I get familiar with this, I thought it might worth it to order a complete set for replacement. The price on Amazon is about 180€, is it worth buying while MB dealer proposed 550€.
Ok my question, I proceed with DIY do I need anything else but connecting the plugs located behind the triangle form internal door panel?
By the way to remove the external part of the mirror set there are 3 screws attached to door external body. Is there any other screws to dismount?
Thanks form your helps.

Hi,
May ask you please if you tell me what is the wire diameter of cables connecting the mirror and blinkers as well as the heat shrink diameter to cover the 4 cables after replacement if needed. I think all 4 are cut somewhere.
Thanks

First post on here, and a thank you for this thread.

The wing mirror adjustment and indicator on the passenger side of my W211 E55 have been messing about last couple of weeks. Had it in to the local independent specialist on Friday for diagnosis, wiring loom for the mirror was damaged. Cost to fix was £236 + VAT for the mirror frame & an hours labour, total of about £380. But, the part isn't available until Weds as MB are moving their local warehouse to Basingstoke this weekend, so I brought the car home.

Woke up in an obstinate mood on Saturday and figured, with the help of this thread, I'd have a look myself.
30 mins later, I think I know what's wrong...

So, off I trot to Maplins and spend £11 for some wire, heat shrink & butane for my soldering iron and...

Not shown in the pic, but one of the black wires to the indicator LED array needed doing too.

30 mins after that was taken it was all back on the car with everything working :thumb:

Total time, just under 3hrs incl. the 1hr return trip to Maplins and a couple of tea breaks.

Hi samali,

I used these items to do mine yesterday...
Maplin Equipment Wire 16-0.2mm Red 10m | Maplin
1.5mm Heat Shrinkable Sleeving 1m | Maplin
I already had some bigger gauge heatshrink in my garage to put round the bundle of cables.

Good job . When you say playing up what was happening. ? My passenger side randomly doesn't open when I unlock the car so I press the mirror button inside to shut them again and then press again and both unfold.

Good job. Gratifying to see someone paying attention to old threads.

I was intermittently getting the dash warning about passenger mirror indicator failure, then the adjustment motors stopped responding.

My dad's car has now got this problem and I presume that it's the wires that have broken. I'm thinking of taking a look at it myself but I'm used to working on Jap cars lol...is there anyone in Manchester who has done this fix that could help me please? Has anyone put together any sort of kit for this issue?

You can get the necessary cable & heatshrink from the two links I posted above.
Other than that, you'll require..
1. Torx driver/bit to remove the mirror assembly from the car (could be done in situ but will be awkward)
2. Wire cutters & stripper
3. Soldering iron
4. Solder
5. Something to heat the heatshrink, I have a butane soldering iron so just use that CAREFULLY, but a heatgun or hairdryer is better if you're not experienced
5. If your hands are as big as mine you may need a small screwdriver to release the two cable connectors inside the door when removing the mirror assembly
6. A little bit of patience

I briefly took the mirror off the car last weekend but couldn't see any obvious breaks in the loom. Didn't have time to take the door card off to disconnect it fully so will do that next time.

Just resurrecting this thread to say thanks for the info. I've just sorted both sides indicators and now have a lovely "NO MALFUNCTIONS" message.

Just if it helps anyone I didn't bother checking the loom I just cut and joine (heat shrinked) a twin core wire bypassing the loom. Easy to do at the mirror and at the module in the door.

Again thanks guys for the invaluable info.

Another thanks for the info and pics in this thread :thumb:

n/s mirror gave the "malfunction" when we folded the mirrors in
(which was not enabled when I bought the car!!)
o/s mirror the electric adjustment did not work
Did not need to add any cable just solder the breaks back together and shrink wrap them.
All working fine again.

I've just finished removing the mirror unit and re-soldering all the wires. Now my mirror operates horizontally and vertically again!

Thanks to everyone in this (old) thread; no doubt I've saved a few ££ plus the satisfaction of doing it yourself is second to none :bannana:

Hi, I would like to check something before I pull off the mirror components - when the wires are exposed how do you identify which cable connects to which, if they are all black and there is more than one cable broken, which I am assuming there are.

I see from a picture in one earlier post that the wires in that picture were colour coded, which is straight forward to repair, but if they are all black then how do I figure out which one connects to which broken end ?

Incidentally, thanks and well done to everyone who has posted to this thread. With all the questions and answers it looks fairly easy to repair this really annoying problem. Particular thanks go to the plentiful information from Druk - thanks.

Wanted to have a look at mine today as the left doesn't adjust up and down. Gave up in the end trying to get the cover off as it feels as though I might break something.

Edit: Worked it out. Took it off to have a look.

I was right, I was going to break something. I put the mirror cover in the foot well and when I picked it up to put it back I dropped it. Yep, cracked the indicator lens.

:wallbash:

Finally got around to pulling the driver's mirror apart on my 2008 w211 yesterday, 3 wires broken all in about the same spot. Spent some time trying to figure out which went to where , got it wrong a couple of times, ended up buzzing outage passenger mirror to get the pinning right. I now have all new wires running from the door control module through to the mirror and an adjustable mirror again

I'll try and neaten up my sketch of the pin numbers and functions for reference later.

This reminds me, I need to remove the side lens from my door mirror to replace it after it got damaged. I believe it's not as simple as job though, unfortunately.

Removing the indicator from mine wasn't too tricky, but it is little involved.
