My key and only key has stopped working the central locking, at first I thought batteries which are only months old as they had to be changed around Christmas time, changed them again and it’s still not working, removing batteries and then putting back together got it to work for a few click, but as of now it 99% of the time won’t work and have to use the blade,
Symptoms of a bad key? I’m covered by insurance for lost/damaged keys and seen as I have only one and no spare think I avail of the cover seen as it’s genuinely not working, just wondering really is this how they fail, and thinking just now, through key cover do you get a pair or a single key?
Fiddling around with blade in this weather isn’t ideal, I forget 😂

Perhaps a dry joint on the circuit board.

Other than that possibly a failing remote receiver, the receiver is built into the radio antenna, has radio reception diminished?

No radio reception is fine, I think it’s just the key as there is no red light illumination when button pressed, or does the light only flash once paired with the car? Personally I think it’s the key but as you say could be failing or failed module maybe? Open to suggestions and information, the lock portion of the key face is cracked and is covered with tape, the way I got it, possibly got wet yesterday idk? I’m getting in touch with insurance tomorrow as it does not effect your premium and tbh the condition of the key it was never going to last forever anyway, also besides the key cover can you get a merc key fob and code it like other cars? Can get that done local unsure of price but I’ve seen the process very simple but unsure if it works with Mercedes?

Some companies have the ability to code new keys to the car but it requires specialist equipment and knowledge.

Mercedes will supply a ready coded key in around 5 to 10 working days. You will need to go to a dealer with photo id, proof of ownership and pay around £250 or more.

I enquired a while back and the parts guy asked the mech standing next to him and he quoted 400 euro, a lot for a key but essential, which is I think, I’ll know tomorrow the limit the key cover I have will pay, as for the other method I’ve seen key is put in a cylindrical key reader of some sorts, it didn’t actually work for me that day and that was for a Volvo, now knowing that someone might be able to tell me if this is an option for me, also I’m completely lacking in knowledge about this, but is there some kind of keyless entry or something similar on some cars, read something about it on here, and drivers door handle seems to have a receiver of some description, there’s a square that’s of no other use on it, not sure about other handles, anyway if there is it does not work admittedly not knowing how it works to start, any light on this would be helpful if someone can fill me in on the function and if it’s one on my car, could possibly strike out the locksmith key reader method if key is more sophisticated than a normal fob ?

The clear window is for the infra red part of the key that operates the global window open /window close system.

It only works at very close range and is notoriously unreliable.

Your key does more than lock or unlock, the immobillidir chip is fitted in the fob and that has to recognised by the electronic ignition switch to release the steering lock and energise the starter etc.
