Hi guys

I've had my W211 E220 (2008) for a few weeks now and have noticed first thing in the morning when cold the car stays in lower gears longer before shifting, once it's warmed up it upshifts quicker and also feels a bit smoother, is this normal? My first automatic car so have nothing to compare it to, cars done 80k, ATF was changed at 40k.

thanks :)

They do hold the lower gears a little longer when the engine is cold to aid warm up and help lower emissions.

Yes it's normal ... done to warm up quicker. Will be mentioned in the handbook ;)

As other said.

I believe the idea is to rev the engine higher in order to bring the cat up to its optimal working temperature as soon as possible, because cats are inefficient when cold.

You should be able to persuade it to shift-up though, by slightly releasing the accelerator and then gently depressing it again.
