Hi Guys,

My dads merc seems to have developed another problem now! The car has got very bad power steering pump whine. Not sure if its the pump itself or low fluid. Can someone point me in the right direction of where the power steering reservoir is please? I have checked the main brake fluid already as I know that a lot of cars tend to share their brake/steering res but that's ok.

If the pump has gone fault though then is it easy to change? The car has only done 31k miles so I'm quite concerned as a pump should surely last longer than that!

Different engine but this video should point you in the direction of reservoir.

Thanks mate! So are they all in a similar location on mercs?

These cars do NOT share the power steering and brake-fluid reservoir.
They are quite separate.
The P.S pump will be in a similar position to the one on the video.
If you unscrew and lift off the cap, there should be a short dip-stick with minimum and maximum level indicators on it.
Usually there are lines for measurements taken when the car is cold and also when the car is hot.
Wipe the dip stick and dip the reservoir.
The fluid level should be between the lines.

Power steering whining is usually caused by low fluid level causing air to be drawn into the pump.

If the level is low, top the fluid up to the correct level and then the air can be expelled by turning the steering wheel to the left and right limits.

Usually, the level should change little over years of use.
If your level is low - Check for leaks in the power steering system.

Be sure to use the correct power steering fluid specified for your car.
Do not use brake fluid.
