Mercedes E270 cdi, 2003
Hi.

I need to change transmission oil for my car Mercedes W211 e270 cdi 2002 (2003 model).
Please what oil I must use. I need a part number for Mercedes oil and other concurrent brands.
another question please, e320 cdi transmission oil filter does fit with e270 cdi one?

Thank you for your help!

Hi and welcome

No idea of part number, I may have it at home on an invoice though.

Only use the MB oil, it is just not worth risking a non compatible oil. The gearbox on the 320 and 270 will be the same so the oil capacity and filters will be the same.

There is a post on here by Black55 (Ollie at PCS) on how to do the change. Try searching.

Whilst a perfectly possible DIY procedure you really do need a proper lift to get the car high enough to remove the sump pan so it can drain more fluid and then be thoroughly cleaned. It is also vital that you get no dirt, lint etc anywhere near the sump or gearbox internals. It is also difficult to remove all of the old oil without special knowledge and tools.

It can also be a problem to remove the sump bolts as they can sieze and sometimes need drilling out. If they come out then you must clean the threads before putting them back. Not sure if you need thread sealant.

You also will not have a transmission dipstick unless you buy one so getting the level correct can be difficult as the dealers and indies use the STAR computer to monitor gearbox temperature whilst filling, checking and re-setting. I would very strongly suggest you get a good indiue to do it (No idea where you are but Ollie at PCS near Horndean is very highly thought of) I was quoted approximately £185 for all parts and labour.

You can use Dexron 3 ATF for your car, I wouldnt pay extra for the MB stuff, its simply no different...
Id only use MB oil on the later 7 speed boxes.

What ATF

Thank you for quick reply!

Actualy I am located outside UK.
Pls, do you know any site where may I buy online transmission oil?
Pls, what mercedes oil may I use, maybe A001 989 45 03 10?

What automatic transmission may my car has, 722.3?

Thank you again guys for help!

That is interesting Jay. I have been told by two indies that the MB oil is not Dexron III and that they would never use it but would only ever use the MB version.

I am certainly not disbelieving you and at over £10 a litre for the MB product using Dexron III for a fluid change would be a lot cheaper.

Speak to the transmission experts such as VMTP, Transmission Technology etc.... They will tell you that Dexron 3 is more than adequate for the older 5 speed boxes.

MB will not list the specs on their containers as they want to sell you their own brand at massive mark ups.

We still use MB oil on the 7 speeds though as its not so clear on that one.

Also see the opie oils site also lists Dex 3 as the correct oil for the OP's car
Car oil recommendations and motorbike oil recommendations

p.s. All the dealers are at it... especially Honda, VW etc.. they wont even tell you the specs of their gear oil and if you ask then they say normal oil will ruin the boxes... total tosh in most cases.

I'd also check the transmission oil for signs of glycol from the antifreeze and if you have a Valeo radiator then change it as this can fail and allow engine coolant into the gearbox with expensive results (possible new gearbox / torque convertor etc).

This affects 03 reg W211's.

A cheap insurance policy.

I hear some buzzing during run, like SBC pump. Buzzing is not periodical is not related with accelerator pedal level, not even with running speed of the car but buzzing is present during run (not continuously).
My question is: do normally SBC pump works while the car is running in certain speed even if the break pedal is not pressed for last (lets say) 5min?

Thanks again!

What Mercedes ATF

Hi.

Pls, is Mercedes ATF 001 989 68 03 13 OK for my gearbox (I think 722.3, mercedes e270 cdi 2002)

Get your SBC pump checked my MB, if its running slow then it will burn out soon. This should be covered by goodwill warranty.

No SBC pump is not running slowly, it runs for about max 3 sec. Is this normal?

I will give you the correct info that you need.

The auto gearbox you have is called a 722.6 5 speed.

It should only have gearbox oil that meets 236.14 spec.

This is the MB part number for the correct oil A001 989 68 03

Dex III is not good enough for your gearbox. I have just checked all the info on WIS for you.

Today I have just had a Viano in with the same gearbox as yours. He has changed the gearbox oil 3 times now with the incorrect spec oil himself and the gearbox is now behaving badly and we have serious amounts of swarf/filings in the sump pan. Dead gearbox.

We have another Viano that we look after that has done 340,000 and the gearbox oil gets changed every 40,000 miles without fail and it is perfect.

Change the oil at the right time with the right spec and you will make it last a very long time.

Lol the brand has got you olly!

MB are good at that.

Vito auto boxes are garbage anyway... we know that..

I guess the OP wants to use MB stuff anyway so thats good, it will help him rest easy...

There are places you can get the MB stuff for a similar price as DEX3 so no real loss.

I use Mobil ATF 134 now as I can buy it in 20L containers rather than the silly 1L. The Mobil ATF is the same price at the MB stuff too. The Mobil ATF134 is listed on the WIS spec sheets for the 5 and 7 speed gearbox. The 638 auto vito gearbox is crap but the 639 is the same as any other 722.6 box.

It is good to see two well respected independents discussing matters in a civilised and adult manner even where there may be some differences of opinion and at the same time adding to the knowledge base for the forum in general.

A pity some posting in the detailing section recently could not take the same approach.

Yes we checked with our supplier that the DEX3 we use does meet the MB spec...

I would also buy those 20L drums which work out cheaper but unfortunately we find that we cannot keep control over the larger barrells and oil seems to go astray....
I used to keep a log of all oil used against the cars we used it in and it never ever totalled up!

Thank you guys for helping me, especially BlackC55 for all that precious info.
Have a good day!

whats the others place you can get MB stuff cheap
