Is it worth fitting one of these to get a bit more V8 sound out of my E500??

Mercedes E500 V8 M113 W211 S211 X-Pipe Vorschalldämpfer Ersatz Edelstahl | eBay

CKS do the same thing but more expensive Mercedes Exhaust Crossover X-Pipe X Pipe W219 CLS500 CLS550 W211 E500 E550 | eBay

Does it need to be fitted in conjunction with rear boxes, or, will this do the job? Not looking for too load - just "throaty"

Thanks

A X-pipe generally replaces both the secondary cats and resonator as in the photo below on my E55. Obviously removing the cats you are open to an MOT failure on the mainland, not sure what happens in Bergerac territory.
The sound is much better under acceleration but not much different on tickover and part throttle.

Don't touch the back boxes unless you want a drone or avery loud sound. I'm happy with putting in a x-pipe and every MOT has been without problems re emissions.

No MOT here - so that wouldn't cause an issue - and I assume it doesn't throw any warning lights

Description on the x-pipe doesn't mentioned if its resonator and secondary cat delete or just resonator, so will ask them (as ideally it needs to be both?)

Wouldn't remove back boxes - made that mistake on an Audi I had, sounded cool on tickover -but anything above that made it unbearable!

No warning lights........that happens if you remove the primary cats.
Take out the secondaries and resonator for best results. It won't be too loud.

CKS is a no no.

I'd read about them (on here and elsewhere) - when I queried their x-pipe price versus the one from Europe they had real attitude - so wouldn't have bought on principal after that

Clearly being in Jersey I don't have access to specialists - but will visit one exhaust place who I think aren't bad and see if they think they can take out the secondary cats and resonator and replace with straight though pipe (or the x-pipe I'll get from Europe)

My car is booked in on the 2nd June to a very well respected exhaust specialist in Glasgow. He has recommended a H pipe for the E55 instead of the X pipe. He has done loads of E55s and says the H pipe gives the car a nice deeper sound whereas the X pipe makes it sound more race car like. That's without removing the secondary CAT and just the resonator. £200 all in.

Ill let you know how it goes. Has anyone else done the resonator but not the secondary CAT? Be good to know.

Didn't on my 211.

I think it may happen on the 212 though.

There were only one set of cats on my 212 John. Obviously the CEL came on as soon as they were removed, but soon had it mapped out. :thumb:

Did you keep your secondary cats though John?
I (maybe wrongly) thought no cats at all would bring on the EML which would have to be mapped out:dk:

My secondaries were missing when I bought it.

My primaries went when I got the Kleemanns.

I remember Jim (black supercharged E63 6.2) mentioned the 212s did it - bears out with Dave's experience above!

Maybe 211s are supposed to too? Mine still had the sensors fitted.

I remember that E63. Wasn't Jim's the first car in the UK to get a Weistec?

Nope. that was Lee's. Jimmy's was the first E Class though, and the first MB to make over 800bhp on the dyno. :)

Awesome car. :thumb:

^ Ah I thought Jimmy's was first but I was wrong .....again!:fail
I wonder what became of it as he had trouble selling it at one point.

I agree 100% with this!
