Somebody remind me: what is the expected normal operating temperature range for an E320cdi?

Throughout a 120 mile motorway journey last evening noticed temp. was hovering just below 80C. Pretty sure it used to be a higher and seem to have "lost" a couple of mpg.

90c would be correct. I changed my thermo and the mpg improved greatly.

48mpg is the best I've achieved on a 50mile trip, prob get 50mpg on a longer trip sticking to the speed limits, but my car is lighter than yours!

I did a trip home last week in our c270 and got an average of 56mpg. This was nearly all motorway cruising though. We changed to this from a V8 Jeep.... I've got a long trip from Wiltshire to the lake district coming up.

I reckon with a light right foot I can get to the lakes and back with one tank in the Merc (with plenty to spare), the Jeep would need 2-3 fill-ups!

Ha ha ha!

Come on, MacTech - show 'im.
If I must...:o
Mine's bigger and heavier than yours!;) But it will still do over 50mpg:D

The temp should be mid 80's but difficult to tell on the 211 gauges with a bar that comes on for every 'lump' of degrees:dk:

Still haven't got 50mpg out of the ML, but I'm working on it. And that's only because you shouldn't be able to!
But I did do a trip up to the lakes last weekend in the ML on a single tank, my wife filled up again yesterday. 740miles!

My temp gauge climbs up to 80C and then stays there. I did once see it add an additional bar on the gauge, but only after being stood on the motorway in traffic hold-ups for quite a while.

My 2003 W211 E320CDI used to stay well below 70C all the time and I would rarely get over 40 mpg. I did get it checked and the thermostat was changed and the temp is now around 90C once it has warmed up. I noticed probably a 10%-15% improvement in the mpg and now regularly get at least 45mpg on motorway journeys without trying...

Thermostat was changed yesterday and temp. now sits about 90/95C-ish.

Over an 90 mile journey this afternoon turned in 43mpg, compared to 38 I had been getting.

Despite all the technology, so much turms on a simple device doing its stuff properly

Mine sits at 80 or lower, is this a thing with W211s?

As for mpg... The top is a regular run from a client's site to home in light traffic and keeping to 70mph. The bottom is a run to another site that is all stop start on a cold morning with the aux heater running...

Noted this morning that car was up to full operating temperature within 5 miles. Previously taking 10+ to get there......

Since my blast round the 'Ring last week, my temp gauge now rests one bar lower than previously. Mpg figures are in the same ball park.

I'm beginning to wonder if a new thermostat might not be a bad precaution...
