Sealed For Life? No. It's life will certainly be shorter if it's not serviced, though. If it drives OK and you buy it, have the trasnsmission oil and filter changed as soon as possible.

What service history is there? At that sort of mileage, if they've not been done it's likely the engine mountings will need replacement, and the rear rigid brake pipes where they run along the sills will almost certainly be badly corroded.

I've had a lot of 211s, all between 80K and 170K (an IL6 320 diesel) when I bought them. None have had any rust problems with the rear subframe. If there is any rust, the front corners of the rear wheel arches are where it will first show up. The only ones I've had that were not showing rust were a 2003 and a 2008; the worst were a 2004 and another 2003. I've had three with the seven-speed 'box; none gave any trouble at all in that area.

I bought a C220 years ago, a 2004 model that had the DPF fitted as an option.

Was indeed 2004 the dpf was introduced.

I've recently read about the dreaded oil cooler seals leaking on these old v6 engines!

Our 2004 e320 CDI S211 has rust on both front lower door panels. My previous E55K had rust developing on the inner rear wheel edge arches.

Nope my 2005 v6 e320 doesn't have a dpf

Not on all engine variants, it was an option. But first come about in 2004

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the mileages however, it went to the MB garage every year. So I would suspect anywhere between 8k-10k between each service?

Engine & transmission box mount is something I was going to get inspected and upon requirement get replaced as well, I wont need a specialist for that. Fairly certain any garage is equipped to do that job.

The transmission box service, is something I need to think about then.....

Thanks for the suggestion. Definitely something I will double check in my testing and service history check.

As I said earlier mine didn’t have the dpf. When I purchased my car it had just over 50k, and had full MBSH, and showed on the paperwork that ATF was changed at 37k by the previous owner, I also subsequently did ATF change twice in my ownership, as per service schedule, and the gearbox was smooth as silk throughout my ownership. Can happily say I did not have spot of rust on my car.

Have not driven then IL6, so cannot comment on the comparison with the V6. But on a side note, have heard good reviews on the new IL6 on the W213 which comes in E350d and E400d 4matic, MY2018, or early 2019.

Just go through the service paperwork, it should be there if it had been done, would be very surprised if it didn’t get a couple of ATF done, especially if it has main dealer service.

Did you have the oil cooler seals leak on your w211?

Fortunately I didn’t, but my Indy WG-MB Harrow, always put a new seal at every service, can’t remember the actual name of the part, round and plastic, orange colour, but it was to prevent the oil leak.

oh right no it wouldn’t be the oil cooler seals cos that’s a massive job to get to the seal.. talking a £1k plus job from most indi’s however there is an indi located somewhere in south London who does the job for £550-£600 and has showed on YouTube it’s a really common problem.. goes by the name MercMan Tips on YouTube
