According to my main dealer, Marcedes were aware of problems with the system and were replacing them free of charge when they reached the end of their serviceable life.

Do you know how that is determined?

MBB said the same issue could be the case with mine but need to charge to investigate.

The dash would display a red warning re low braking pressure, advising me to start the engine to pressurise the system. When it went in for a service the diagnostic check said the SBC had reached the end of its servicable life.

I think this was /is based on the number of applications of the braking system during the cars life. Because I do a very high mileage I reached this when the car was just under 4 years old. The dealer approached Mercedes without me knowing and they agreed to a free replacement. I was told the unit was £750 ish and another £400 ish to fit, so I was very happy.
