If the actuator or motor that releases the fuel filler flap were to fail, you have the option of releasing it by accessing the release knob (which is not a knob but rather looks like a key) and turning it clockwise. Its located hidden away behind the trunk lining on the right side. All this info in the owners manual (page 357) which is excellent...but...
Why would an "emergency" release be located in a recess that requires one to partly remove the trunk lining and the lining clips cannot be undone by bare hands (you need a nose plier + screwdriver at the least).
It should have been made more accessible.
